Towards Space
공간을 향하여
I find the motif of my work around my life. As I walk down the street, I interpret the source of the beauty of the form in an object that catches my eye, and find its metaphorical symbolism.
The objects selected as the motif of the work convey a metaphorical message to me. Such a message is an extremely personal interpretation, and I call it an aesthetic experience. This aesthetic experience reminds one of an image of a specific form, and I think that such images are in contact with the aesthetic instinct inherent in humans. I search for such forms, and I create them as objects with a new feeling through my method of expression. The materials selected for me are geometrically reconstructed, and each side of the object is produced in a pyramid-shaped three-dimensional form using tin. The aggregated shapes of polygonal horns of different sizes and inclinations give me joy. The source of that joy is a feeling that comes from repetition and concentration. In the form of agglomeration of polygonal horns, there is a disgusting feeling of wriggling toward birth along with the sounds of living things that break through the earth.
The reason tin was chosen as a medium is because of the effect that light gives. The luster, which is reflected in various ways according to the light coming from the outside, is a major component of my work. The shadows cast by the inclined inclination of geometric shapes form a deep and intimate sense of space.
I imagined many things in the form while thread playing with my friends in my childhood. In the structure that is shaped differently by the direction of the fingers, the organic connection created by imagination was the attribution to space.
Space-making play is my satisfied desire for comfort, and I filled up my lack by accumulating space in my imagination. I think that such memories are the source of a special attachment to geometric shapes.
나는 작업의 모티브를 생활 주변에서 찾는다. 길을 걷다가 유독 눈길을 끄는 물체에서 그 형태가 주는 아름다움의 근원을 해석하고, 그 은유적 상징성을 찾 는다. 그렇게 작업의 모티브로 선택된 물체들은 나에게 은유적인 메시지를 전 한다. 그러한 메시지는 극히 개인적인 해석이며, 나는 그것을 미적 경험이라 칭한다. 이 미적 경험이란 어떠한 특정한 형태에 대해서 이미지를 떠올리고 그 러한 이미지들은 인간에게 내재된 미적 본능과 맞닿아 있다고 생각한다. 나는 그러한 형태들을 찾아가며, 그것들을 나의 표현방식에 의해 새로운 느낌의 물 체들로 탄생시킨다. 나에게 선택된 소재들은 기하학적으로 재구성되어 물체의 각각의 면들은 함석을 이용한 피라미드 모양의 입체적 형태로 제작된다. 각각 의 크기와 기울기가 다른 다각면체의 뿔들이 응집된 형태들은 나에게 희열을 준다. 그 희열의 근원은 반복과 밀집에서 오는 느낌이다. 다각면체의 뿔들이 서로 응집하여 군집된 형태에서 대지를 뚫고 일어나는 생명체들의 소리와 더 불어 탄생을 향하여 꿈틀대는 역겨움이 함께 존재한다.
매체로서 함석을 선택한 것은 그 빛이 주는 효과 때문이다. 외부로부터 오는 빛에 따라 변화무쌍하게 반사되는 그 광택은 나의 작품을 구성하는 주요한 요 소이다. 기하학적 형체들의 경사진 기울기에 의해 드리워진 그림자들은 그 속 에 깊고 내밀한 공간감을 형성한다.
나는 어린 시절 친구들과 실뜨기 놀이를 하면서 그 형태 속에서 많은 것들을 상상했다. 손가락의 방향에 의해서 각각 다르게 모양이 지어지는 그 구조 속에 서 상상으로 만들어낸 그 유기적 연결은 공간으로의 귀속이었다. 공간 만들기 놀이는 안락함에 대한 나의 충족적 욕구로 나는 상상 속에서 공간을 쌓아가며 나의 결핍을 채워갔다. 그러한 기억들이 기하학적 형태에 대한 특별한 애착의 근원이 아닌가 생각한다.
