An interruption in a system can create a problem in field of rationale, but my practice focuses on these glitches of a contrasting spectrum between art and design. The idea behind a gradient derives from visual familiarity with human nature. Presenting an intimate sequence that viewers can follow, an invitation to my work. Composing space around it with disparate elements create a powerful sense of chaos or depth. It’s a result of trying to create the dual quality a painting can give. Flattening and deepening, pushing and pulling, expectations and chaos. A tuned mixture of system and interruptions.
Transforming the painting’s environment further experiments painting relation. Presenting a painting unconventionally with built devices and unhung from walls mark my interest in design and art.
시스템 속 오류는 기계학이나 수학적 공식에서는 골칫거리일 수 있다. 하지만 내가 바라보는 시스템 속 오류는 흥미로운 글리치 (Glitch) 효과로, 극명한 대비가 주는 차이의 관계에 집중한다.
그라데이션의 활용은 시각적으로 인간에게 친근하고, 규칙의 배열이 있기에 관객에게 읽을 수 있는 요소로 초대장과 같은 역할을 한다. 배열을 통해서 시스템을 만들고 시스템 속 이질적인 디자인으로 구성한 오류는 순간적인 글리치를 포착하는 것과 같다. 내가 생각하는 회화의 가장 큰 이점인 이중적 현상을 잘 나타내며 평면적이면서 입체적이며 들어가면서 나오는 현상은 내 작업 속 중요한 요소이다.
작업 시작과 동시에 시스템이 먼저 탄생한다. 그라데이션, 공간감, 또는 패턴을 묘사하는 배열 탄생한다. 이후로는 색감, 구도, 형태를 가지고 시스템을 조금씩 변형시킨다. 이때부터는 혼자서 침대를 정리하듯 과정에 생기는 틈과 문제들을 풀어낸다. 그 끝은 전혀 다른 결과로 나오기도 한다. 회화를 전시하는 행위 또한 글리치를 주는 효과와 비슷하다. 회화를 벽에서 떼어놓거나, 가구 형태와 결합하여 완성하는 방식 역시 시스템 속 오류를 주면서 나타나는 효과에 집중하기 위한 선택이다.
YJ Chung (1992), born in Seoul had spent half of his teenage years in United States. His constant moves from Seoul to USA gave unique style of interpreting East and West, and the world. After his BFA degree in GFA (General Fine Art) from Maryland Institute College of Art from Maryland, he begins working as graphic designer in Seoul, from advertisement, cosmetics, and into fashion.
Working both in design and art made his work to become multidisciplinary, yet his work is much based in painting. His work plays with geometric shapes, color and design elements in creating space within his work.
정연재 작가는 1992년 서울에서 태어났지만, 청소년기의 절반을 미국에서 보냈다. 서부와 동부의 문화 환경이 수시로 바뀌는 경험은 이후 회화와 디자인을 경계 없이 오가는 작업에서도 나타난다. 미국 메릴랜드 예술대학에서 현대미술 공부를 마치고, 한국에서 본격적으로 그래픽 디자이너로 활동을 시작했다. 디자이너이자 작가로 활동하는 그의 작품은 회화를 가구나 설치 미술과 결합하는 작업을 종종 볼 수 있다. 다양한 매체를 활용 하지만 그의 작품은 회화를 기반으로 하고 있다.
