Surfaces of Lingering Emotions 남겨진 감정의 표면들
“Colors of memory, emotional scribbles – a quiet landscape of longing and freedom.” On top of spontaneous scribbles infused with emotion, memory and freedom quietly bloom. We live each day brushing past countless emotions. Many of them are difficult to name, impossible to explain in words, yet they leave quiet traces somewhere deep within us. This exhibition is a visual journey through those lingering emotional fragments—an unconscious collection of the artist’s inner landscapes. Each piece begins with broad strokes of acrylic paint, creating an emotional atmosphere like the background of a memory. The surface becomes layered with free-form oil pastel drawings—intuitive and spontaneous marks that reflect the raw trace of thoughts and feelings flowing from the artist’s inner world. Within the lines and shapes, one might find subtle hints of nature: sprouting grass, flickers of love, or the innocent imagery of childhood. These elements echo forgotten times and the longing for freedom. In her own space of permission and emotional release, the artist allows unfiltered feelings to unfold directly onto the canvas. The works do not seek to interpret or fix emotions. Instead, they remain open—inviting viewers to project their own memories and sensations onto the surface. Through the act of “recording emotion,” the exhibition reveals how unspoken, unseen feelings can take visual form. Each painting becomes both a work of art and a quiet journey following the texture of the heart. In that journey, even fragments of emotion the artist herself had not fully recognized begin to surface—gently, without force. These are not paintings striving for perfection or closure, but drawings that trace emotional movement. In them, lines and colors hold space for the parts of the heart that words cannot reach. For the artist, painting is a language of the soul—a way of touching the surface of emotions that remain unshaped. A single doodled line, a clash of unknown colors, soon becomes a scene; sometimes even summoning unexpected memories. The work values process over result, inviting viewers to pause within that process and encounter their own emotional spaces in return.
“기억의 색, 감정의 낙서 . 그리움과 자유가 공존하는 작은마음의풍경” ‘감정이 흘러든 낙서위로, 기억과 자유가 피어납니다. 우리는 매일 스치듯 감정을 느끼며 살아간다. 그감정들은 때로 이름붙이기 어렵고, 문장으로 설명할 수 없지만 , 마음 어딘가에 흔적으로 남아있다. 이 전시는 그 남겨진 감정의 조각들을 따라가며 작가가 무의식적으로 채집한 마음의 풍경을 기록한 것이다. 작업은 아크릴 물감으로 큰 흐름과 분위기를 먼저 그려내며 시작된다. 마치 기억의 배경처럼 펼쳐지는 색과 면은 감정의 무게와 리듬을 담고 있다. 그위에 얹히는 오일파스텔의 드로잉은 즉흥적이고 자유로운 낙서의 형태로 , 작가의 내면에서 흘러나온 감정과 생각의 흔적이다. 그 선과 형상들 안에는 종종 풀과 자연에서 받은 영감이 숨어 있고 , 사랑의 감정이 숨겨있을 때도 있고, 때로는 유년기의 감각과 동심의 이미지들이 모습을 드러낸다. 그것은 잊고 지낸 어떤 시간, 자유롭고 싶던 마음의 흔적이다. 작가는 스스로에게 허락된 자유의 공간 안에서 , 억눌림 없는 감정의 움직이을 화면위에 그대로 남긴다. 작품은 감정을 해석하거나 고정하지 않는다. 오히려 관람자 스스로 자신의 기억과 감각을 덧입힐 수 있도록 열려 있다. 이전시는 ‘감정을 기록한다’ 는 행위를 통해 , 존재했지만 말해지지 않았던 감정들이 어떻게 시각적으로 남겨질 수 있는지를 보여준다. 그것은 하나의 회화이자, 동시에 마음의 결을 따라가는 조용한 여행이기도 하다. 그리고 그여정의 끝에는 , 작가조치 미처 몰랐던 감정의 파편들이 고요히 떠오른다. 완성을 향한 그림이 아니라, 감정의 움직임을 따라가는 드로잉, 그안엔 선과 색을 빌린채 , 말로는 닿지 않는 마음들이 조용히 머물러있다. 작가에게 있어 그림은 마음 깊은곳의 언어이자, 아직 정리되지 않은 감정의 표면을 쓰다듬는 행위이다. 낙서처럼 시작된 선 하나, 알 수 없는 색의 충돌은 어느새 하나의 장면이 되고, 스스로도 예상치 못한 기어의 파편을 불러낸다. 작품은 완성보다는 과정에 머무르고자 하며, 관람자 역시 그 과정 속 자유로운 감정의 여백을 마주하길 바란다.
Woo Sehee is an abstract artist who records the lingering traces of emotion onto the surface of the canvas. Rather than illustrating specific narratives, she captures the fragments of feelings that are often fleeting, unnamed, and left unspoken—yet remain quietly etched within us. Her process begins with large flows of acrylic paint, evoking the background tones of memory and atmosphere. These broad strokes hold the weight and rhythm of internal states. On top of these layers, she intuitively adds drawings in oil pastel—impulsive, almost childlike marks that trace the emotional and mental residue flowing from within. In her visual language, one may catch glimpses of nature, the softness of love, or the innocence of childhood. These recurring elements are not direct depictions but echoes of forgotten time, of the longing for emotional freedom. For Woo, painting is a space of permission—where she allows herself to leave raw emotional movements untouched and unfiltered on the surface. Her works do not seek to define or confine emotion. Instead, they remain open, inviting the viewer to project their own memories, feelings, and sensory experiences. Through the act of “recording emotions,” her paintings become quiet landscapes of the mind—drawings that follow the grain of inner movement rather than fixed compositions. To the artist, painting is a language of the deep self, a way to gently touch the surface of unresolved emotion.
