    A Society’s Reflections of Self

A Society’s Reflections of Self is a solo exhibition by poet/writer, curator, and multi-disciplined artist Uzomah Ugwu. Her poetry, writing, and art have been featured internationally in various publications, galleries, art spaces, and museum. She is a political, social, and cultural activist. Her core focus is on human rights, mental health, animal rights, and the rights of LGBTQIA persons. She is the author of the chapbook The Triumph of Sorrow: A Lover of Longing. She is also the managing editor and founder of Arte Realizzata. A Society’s Reflections of Self is her series that has a means of showing a world where worth is something obtainable through various issues and causes. Through bold images of everyday life, she adds subtle but demanding text that draws out the meaning of her art. Humanity and the history of societal, cultural, and political struggle are the core of this project. Often, people find their true reflections of themselves in outside influences such as events rather than within. A Society’s Reflections of Self gives an honest view on various topics that are otherwise disregarded but affect everyone’s day-to-day life and how they see themselves through the lens of society and less too often themselves. Wrapped deep in the visuals are metaphors and symbolism that carry over the text and marry the two to convey a message that is poignant and able to reach anyone in its relatable way to everyday life. Most of the images draw on irony, while others are literal interpretations of a prediction or statement. Overall, the series invites the audience to reflect on their life sequences and to consider whether some aspects of our lives are not just mere reflections and simply creations of our own making. That life is something worth seeking within to address outside issues and subjects.
