‘온전한 원을 향하여’
인간의 삶은 ‘생’이라는 지점에서 ‘죽음’이라는 또 하나의 지점을 향해 가는, 직선형의 움직임이다. 이 일방적이고 확정적인, 타협의 여지 없는 여정 속에서 인간은 언제 어디서 맞닥뜨릴지 모를 마지막 종착지에 대해 두려움을 느낀다. 한치 앞도 내다 볼 수 없는 것이 인간의 삶이기에, 한 쪽 끝에서 다른 끝으로 내달리는 삶이 아닌 끝과 끝이 맞닿아 있어 영원히 끝나지 않는, 온전한 원의 삶의 굴레를 감히 상상해본다. 그러나 끝이 없는 삶이란 또 얼마나 권태로울 것이며 또 얼마나 허황된 욕망인가. 유려하게 뻗어나가는 온전한 원의 둘레를 꿈꾸며, 삶의 여정의 전면에 놓인 죽음보다 살아있는 지금, 현재 살아있음에 집중한다.
가끔은 우리가 삶을 살아오며, 사실은 아슬아슬하게 빗겨났던 수많은 죽음의 가능성들에 대해 생각해본다. ‘운’이라는 장막에 가려 매복 되어있던 죽음과 곳곳에 도사리고 있는 위험의 가능성들은, 삶의 여정을 돌아보았을 때 이 생이 얼마나 수 많은 죽음의 가능성을 뛰어넘었는 지를 일깨워주며 기적적인 삶을 살아가고 있음을 느낀다. 나는 이러한 생의 한 가운데에서 생의 궤적과 죽음의 가능성을 관찰하며 인간의 두려움과 욕망, 연약함에 대한 탐구를 그림으로 남긴다.
양수연(1988-)은 서울대학교 동양화과에서 학사와 석사, The Chinese University of Hong Kong에서 MFA 과정을 졸업하였다. 인간이라면 누구나 겪게 되는 일련의 사건인 생과 죽음- 그 중에서도 죽음에 대한 인간의 두려움과 죽음으로부터 벗어나고자 하는 인간의 욕망을 회화적 언어로 시각화 한다. 문화재 모사 사업에 참여하며 전통 재료 기법에 대한 연구를 한 경험을 바탕으로, 한국화의 다양한 표현 기법과 재료를 현대적으로 해석하여 전통 회화의 새로운 가능성을 탐구하고자 한다.
가송예술상 입선(2021), Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize Highly Commended(영국, 2021)을 수상하였고, 2회의 개인전을 가졌으며 다수의 국내외 그룹전, 아트페어에 참여하였다.
현재는 서울대학교 동양화과 박사과정을 수료하였고, 서울과 홍콩을 오가며 활동하고 있다.
The Journey to the Infinite Circle
Human life is linear, as it goes from one point to another – from life to death. In this unidirectional, definitive, uncompromising journey, humans are afraid of death – the final destination of our journey that we do not know when and where we will face. Since life is something that cannot be predicted even a second ahead, I dare to imagine a complete circle of life that never ends, rather than a life that runs from one end to another.
However, on the other hand, how dull would our lives be if our lives were perpetual? Dreaming of a perpetual life would also eventually be a vain desire.
Nonetheless, we cannot stop dreaming of an infinite circle of life that stretches out gracefully. With our hopes of living an eternal life, we tend to care more about our present and care less towards the end of our journey.
Reminiscing the past, we often recall the incidents that nearly put our lives to death or moments that death swept away. Those moments make us believe that death might have been hidden underneath the veil of ‘fortune’ and be grateful for being lucky. This belief motivates me to capture the traces of life and to depict the possibilities of death, quest for human’s fear, desire and weakness in my paintings.
Sueyon Yang (b.1988-) is an artist, painter and researcher. She obtained her BA of Fine Arts (2011) and MFA (2014) in Korean traditional painting from the Seoul National University, Korea. She then went onto receive her second MFA from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (2019).
Sueyon’s works focus on life and death, particularly on fear of death and futile desire for immortality. She visualizes her theme through recreating the mythical symbols of longevity using Korean traditional painting techniques and materials which she studied while working as a researcher producing replicas of cultural heritages for national museums in South Korea. She would like to explore new possibilities of the traditional painting by combining traditional materials and contemporary expressions.
Sueyon was awarded the Ghasong Art Award (2021), the Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize Highly Commended (UK, 2021). She recently had two solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group shows, art fairs both domestically and internationally.
Currently, she has completed her DFA in Korean traditional painting from Seoul National University. She resides and works in both two cities- Seoul and Hong Kong.
