This is urine (2023)
Humans and the natural world are inextricably linked. Humans obtain resources from nature and return their waste back into the natural system. – Could humans produce resources that are entirely self-generated? (2017~), which began in late 2017 as a long journey of searching for answers, is an experimental work that explores the potential and aesthetic value of urine. Urine is a substance that humans produce every day, and prior to industrialization, it was used in various ways in daily life, such as for dyeing and washing fabrics, as well as agricultural fertilizers and even teeth whitening agents, but in modern times, it has been stigmatized as a useless and disgusting material. Nonetheless, it has begun to receive attention for its potential in the scientific community and is now recognized as a potential building material for the future. I focused on the chemical properties of urine and conducted material experiments for about eight months, expanding its applicability from a cleaning agent to dyes and ceramic glazes. With the possibility of using urine as a glaze, I have presented the (2018,19,20) collection to the public following the material sample (2018) through ceramics as a medium. Afterwards, I met audiences from various countries such as Europe, the United States, and Korea through exhibitions, and discovered interesting points of collision in their recognition of urine as a material. This discovery was a decisive factor in planning the workshop (2022). Motivated by the urine tax system that was nationally practiced during the Roman era, I created a performance that involves the financial trade of urine, which aimed to provoke a sense of discomfort and interest in the audience, as they act as material suppliers for the artwork. – How can the artistic use of urine be perceived and sensed? – What impacts can this kind of an experimental work have on the current value system of the materials that we possess? (2023) can be considered as a progressive work that explores the questions mentioned earlier. I frequently redefine cultural and social hierarchies by focusing on the distinct properties of abandoned materials. I create experimental results that contrast with social norms and encourage the audience to indirectly experience the exploration and experimentation. Through this experience, the audience is encouraged to question how the value of urine differs from that of urine in the past, and what artistic significance can be derived from it.
인간은 자연과 공생하는 존재이다. 인간은 자연에게 자원을 얻고 그 폐기물을 다시 자원에 흘려보낸다. – 인간 스스로 자원을 생산하는 생산자 일 수는 없을까? 2017년 말부터 진행한 (2017~)은 그 질문을 찾는 긴 여정으로, 화학분야 전문가가 함께 한 바이오 아트 프로젝트로 소변의 새로운 역할에 대한 가능성과 심미적 가치를 탐구하는 실험적인 작업 이다. 소변은 인간이 매일 밖으로 ‘생산’해내는 물질로, 산업화 이전에 직물 염색 및 세탁이나 농업 비료, 심지어 치아 미백제까지 다양한 방식으로 실생활에 쓰였지만 현대에는 쓸모 없는 혐오 물질의 대표적인 물질로 낙인찍히게 되었다. 하지만 과학계에서 그 잠재성을 주목받기 시작하여 최근엔 미래의 건축 재료 로서 그 가능성을 인정받고 있다. 나는 이러한 소변의 화학적 특성에 주목하여 매염제에서부터 염료, 도자 기 유약까지 그 적용성을 넓히며 재료 실험을 약 8개월에 걸쳐 진행하였다. 그 중, 소변이 유약으로 쓰일 수 있다는 가능성에 무게를 두고, 도자기라는 매체를 통해 (2018) 재료 샘플에 이어서 (2018,19,20) 콜렉션을 대중들에게 선보였다. 이후 유럽과 미국, 그리고 한국 등 다양한 국가의 관객들을 전시를 통해 만나면서 그들이 재료로서의 소변을 인식함에 있어 흥미로운 충돌 지점이 있다는 것을 발견하였다. 이러한 발견은 <소변세의 현대적 재현>(2022) 워크숍 기획에 결정적인 계기가 되었다. 로마시대 국가적 으로 행해졌던 소변세(urine tax)를 모티브로 하여 소변을 금전적으로 거래하는 퍼포먼스로, 소변의 예술 적 쓰임을 마주한 관객들에게 불편함과 대비되는 흥미를 느끼게 하였다. – 소변의 예술적 활용은 어떻게 이해되고 감각될 수 있을까? – 이러한 재료 실험 작업이 현재 우리가 가지고 있는 물질들의 가치 체계에 어떤 변화를 줄 수 있을까? 나는 종종 주변 물질들의 고유 특성에 주목하여 문화 및 사회적 위치를 재정의한다. 사회 통념과 대비되는 실험 결과물들을 구성하고, 구성된 탐색과 실험을 관객이 간접적으로 경험하도록 유도한다. (국가별 정도 는 다르지만) 그들이 가지고 있는 사회문화적 편견에 기반하여 다양한 피드백이 오기도 한다. 이러한 경험 을 통해 관객들로 하여금 역사적 소변과는 다르게 현대의 소변의 가치는 어떻게 가늠할 수 있으며, 이는 예술적으로 어떤 의미가 있을지에 대한 질문을 주고자 한다.
I am Sinae Kim, and I work as a material researcher and an artist. I view materials from environmental and historical perspectives, exploring their relationship with science, art, and design through experimental processes. Furthermore, I am exploring the various possibilities of humans living in symbiosis with their surroundings, similar to other living beings that can generate their own resources.
