Shape of Life
세상에 존재하는 모든 살아있는 것에는 내면에 생명이 존재한다. 모든 생명체의 생김새 또는 그 생명들의 성격이 모두 다르듯 그 안에 내재되어 있는 생명의 생김새 또한 모두 다를 것이라고 생각하였다. 그리고 이렇게 “살아있음”이라는 성격을 지니며 세상의 모든 것에 각기 다른 삶을 부여하는 생명은 외적으로는 볼 수 없지만 자연 속에서 생성되고 끊임없이 순환한다. 본인은 생명이 유동하는 모습을 본인의 감정이입과 상상을 통한 이미지를 만들어 형상을 추상적인 형태로 작업해 나가고자 하였다.
우리는 누구나 생명이라는 말을 알고 있다. 생명이 무엇인지를 누구에게 배워본 일은 없지만, ‘생명’하면 머릿속에 떠오르는 이미지를 가지고 있다. 이것이 우리가 가지고 있는 생명의 개념이다. ‘생명’이라는 개념은 우리가 의식적으로 학습하지 않고 얻게 되는 자득적 개념이며, 따라서 우리도 모르는 사이에 이것이 우리의 관념 안에 깊숙이 자리 잡고 있다.
생명은 내적인 생명 충동과 동적이며 예측하기 어려운 흐름에 의해서 진화한다. 이러한 흐름은 우주에 하나로 흐르고 있으며 생명을 지속시키는 근원적 힘으로 작용한다. 이러한 생명은 동양에서의 ‘기(氣)’라는 개념과 일맥상통하는 면이 있다. 본인은 이러한 생명과 그 생명을 지속시키거나 유지하는 근원적인 힘을 보는 관점을 ‘기(氣)’로 보고자 하였다. 본인은 생명의 형상을 그리는 작업을 하는데 생명은 눈에 보이지는 않지만 분명히 존재한다고 우리는 생각하고 있다. 그 이유는 눈에 보이지 않는 생명은 생명의 움직임 즉, 기(氣)의 움직임을 통해 우리에게 그 존재를 드러내기 때문이다. 본인은 그 움직임을 운(韻)으로 보고 생명이 움직임을 통해 드러내는 형상을 유동(流動)하거나 또는 하나의 파동이나 불규칙한 리듬이 있는 것처럼 표현하고자 하였다.
Every living thing that exists in the world has a life inside it. Just as the appearance or character of all living things is different, I thought that the appearance of life inherent in them would also be different. And life, which has the character of “living” and gives different life to everything in the world, is invisible from the outside, but is created in nature and circulates endlessly. I tried to work on the shape in an abstract form by creating an image of the flow of life through my empathy and imagination.
We all know the word life. I have never learned from anyone what life is, but I have an image that comes to mind when I hear ‘life’. This is our concept of life. The concept of ‘life’ is a self-evident concept that we acquire without consciously learning it, and therefore it is deeply rooted in our conception without even knowing it. Life evolves by an inner life impulse and a dynamic and unpredictable flow.
This flow flows as one in the universe and acts as a fundamental force that sustains life. This kind of life has something in common with the concept of ‘qi’(=energy) in the East. I tried to see this life and the fundamental power that sustains or maintains this life as ‘qi’. I work on drawing the shape of life, and we think that life is invisible but definitely exists. The reason is that the invisible life reveals its existence to us through the movement of life, that is, the movement of energy. I viewed the movement as a rhyme and tried to express the shape that life reveals through movement as if it were flowing or there was a single wave or irregular rhythm.
신대현작가는 충북대학교 조형예술학과에서 석사를 졸업하였고 홍익대학교 미술학과 동양화전공 박사수료 하였다. 처음엔 채색화 위주의 작업을 해왔으나 먹을접하게 되면서 수묵을 이용한 추상화로 작업이 변화하게된다. 생명에 대한 주제로 작업을 해오다가 보이지 않는 것에 대한 모습에 관심을 가지게 되며 생명의 형상에 대한 자신의 상상력을 바탕으로 작업을 하고 있다. 신대현 작가는 2019년 첫 개인전을 시작으로 2020년과 2022년 총 세 번의 개인전을 가졌으며, 다수의 현대미술동인에 참여하여 다수의 그룹전에 참여하며 작가활동을 꾸준히 이어오고 있다.
