[OFF] World: Finite Projections in Infinite Space

“We can neither imagine an object or being without space. Space, therefore, is not only an indispensable condition of all existence, but a fundamental property of our consciousness. Our consciousness determines the kind of space in which we live. The infinity of space and the infinity of consciousness are identical. The way in which we experience space, or in which we are aware of space, is a characteristic of the dimensions of our consciousness.”

    -Lama Anagarika Govinda

Maintaining social distance over a long period of time brings about a heightened sense of awareness regarding the nature of space. Our understanding of space and our position within it is at the core of human consciousnesses itself. Point and line serve as the fundamental visual foundation for representing space. Somewhat ironically, both point and line embody a necessary flatness; from which we can begin to describe the first, second, and third dimensions. These three dimensions constitute a dynamic system for the articulation of space, volume, and the material world.

[OFF] World: Finite Projections in Infinite Space, is an exploration of the structure of space and visual references to solid form. Several of the point and line elements found in the prints are derived from the theoretical imaginative realm where mathematics and visual art meet. In these cases, the geometric forms are of both a semi-sacred and practical nature, suggesting patterns of global distribution, lines of communication, and interconnected social communities. There are also a number of geometric patterns in the prints that have been abstracted from astronomy and astrophysics. These are geometries that describe phenomenon such as the orbital motion of bodies in outer space, gravitational effects, and also map the position of recently discovered Earth-like planets with the potential for sustaining organic life elsewhere in the universe. In the context of our current predicament here on Earth where we continue to confront issues of climate change, overpopulation, finite natural resources, and a global pandemic; the geometric structures embedded in these prints offer a harmonic vision of a post-pandemic reformation in an enlightened and evolved [Off] World.
