My work deals with the strengths and weaknesses of the human condition. I work in series using many different media to layer the many meanings of each project. Traditional and digital printmaking combines with drawing, painting, photography and written texts in each series.
Deteriorate deals with aging, specifically the mental deterioration of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. This series consists of prints that use traditional and digital printmaking techniques along with hand drawn elements. Photographs and drawings of nursing home patients in an Alzheimer’s ward created the basis for each print. Each print includes many layers, each layer representing another part of the aging process, and the distancing one must feel as they lose their memories of, and connections to, their loved ones. These works convey the sadness and
confusion that is involved with Alzheimer’s disease. It is hard to forget the lonely lost look in the patient’s eyes, and these haunting looks became the focus of my prints.
Deteriorate uses multiple print methods to address the past and present, the idea of memory and remembering. Dementia and Alzheimer’s is becoming more and more common with an aging population and its effect on both the patient, the caretaker and the family members is devastating.
My prints attempt to relate my experiences and emotions and loss with those of others who have witnessed the loss of a loved one’s mind.
Sarah Sipling’s work deals with the strengths and weaknesses of the human condition. She is skilled in digital and traditional printmaking methods and incorporates photography, interactive digital media, and hand-drawn elements into her print-based work. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in cities and countries, including New York, Anchorage, New Orleans, San Francisco, Spain, and England. Sipling received her BFA from SUNY Purchase College and her MFA in printmaking from Rhode Island School of Design. She is currently creating art, traveling and teaching as an Assistant Professor, in the areas of traditional and experimental printmaking and digital and analog photography.
