Future Phantoms
Future Phantoms is a project by Australian artist Saffron Newey. It features hand painted laser-cut aluminium birds, characters and elements all sourced from the Internet. These painted motifs have been appropriated from historical paintings of the Baroque and Romantic and periods alongside low-brow stock imagery and even fantasy art, sourced online. As a form of painterly time travel, Newey brings the past to the present and creates installations that collapse historical chronology.
Saffron Newey is an Australian painter who has exhibited for over 25 years and is represented by Jan Manton Art in Brisbane, Australia. In 2019 she was awarded a Ph.D by Commonwealth Scholarship at RMIT University. Today, Newey lectures in the Bachelor of Fine Art (Painting) at RMIT, Melbourne, Australia. Newey’s practice interrogates the affect that the Internet and digital media has on the tradition of painting.
