Napkin was studied as a main material for two years and various artistic possibility was found. In the installation for this exhibition, the ‘side’ and ‘texture’ factors of the artwork were concentrated. The soft and flexible sides were turned into a wall sharing the space and provided a road between one artwork to another. People were able to experience the artwork with their eyes and body directly by having them wander in and out of that road. Under the dim lights, one can experience the change of artworks overlapping depending on the locations where people are standing.
Five artworks were made in different methods, but looking at it as a whole, it looks like one piece of artwork. An idea appeared back to back while making one artwork and this holds a continuity for the next one. These are all mixed in one place. The common features are small soft napkin turned into a big firm art work. In this process a long time and repetitive action are included.
As result, individual napkin piled becoming one artwork, and each artworks gathered forming into a new world. The abstract form and the wrinkle, grain, layer of the napkin remind something from the nature. The material napkin is also from the nature, and the yellowish color that hasn’t been bleached is also like the nature. The organic artworks connected with the nature in many ways seems to be moving and alive.
냅킨이라는 재료를 2년간 깊게 탐구하였고 다양한 미적 가능성을 발견했다. 이번 전시에서는 작품의 ‘면’적인 요소와 ‘텍스처’에 집중해서 설치를 했다. 부드럽고 유연한 면들은 벽이 되어 공간을 나누고 작품과 작품 사이에 길을 낸다. 사람들이 그 길을 드나들 수 있게 함으로써 작품을 눈으로 보고 몸으로 느낄 수 있게 하였다. 어슴푸레한 조명 속에서 사람들은 서 있는 위치에 따라 작품들이 겹쳐지고 중첩되는 변화를 경험할 수 있다.
5개의 작품은 각각 다른 방법으로 제작되었으나 크게 보면 하나의 작품같다. 한 작품을 만들면서 아이디어가 꼬리에 꼬리를 물고 떠올랐고 이는 다음 작품이 되는 연속성을 지니고 있다. 이들은 한 자리에 혼재되어 있다. 공통된 점은 작고 부드러운 냅킨이 누적되어 커다랗고 단단한 작품으로 자라났다는 것이다. 이 과정 속에 기나긴 시간과 반복적인 행위도 포함된다.
결과적으로 냅킨이 쌓여 하나의 작품이 되고, 각각의 작품들이 모여 누적된 세계를 이룬다. 추상적인 형태와 냅킨이 만들어낸 주름, 결, 층은 자연 속 무언가를 연상시킨다. 냅킨이라는 재료도 자연에서 왔고 표백하지 않은 누런 색 또한 자연의 그것과 닮았다. 여러모로 자연과 맞닿아 있는 유기적인 작품들은 움직이는 것 같고 살아있는 것 같다.
Nawoon Shin is a visual artist, making 3-dimensional artwork using variety material and installing it in a space. The work begins with experimenting and studying the material, mainly non-traditional and unusual things are considered for the work. In this process physical intervention of my hands and body is enjoyed. At times, I often think that I build some ‘world’ by using materials. This is an organic world full of energy and aliveness.
The Author studied fine arts from Chelsea College of Arts and Designs in London graduating with a bachelor’s degree and has been carrying out her art work in Seoul since 2018. With the solo exhibition in 2020 summer at Gallery DOS as a starting point, the second show will be held at the CICA Museum.
신나운 작가는 다양한 재료를 사용해서 입체 작품을 만들고 이를 공간에 설치하고 있다. 작업은 재료를 실험하고 탐구하는 것에서 시작되고, 주로 비전통적이고 의외의 재료를 쓰려고 한다. 이 과정에서 내 손과 몸을 사용해 직접 만드는 물리적인 개입을 즐긴다. 때때로 재료를 사용해서 어떤 ‘세계’를 짓고 있다는 생각이 든다. 그것은 생동하는 에너지로 가득 찬 유기적인 세계이다.
작가는 런던 Chelsea College of Arts and Designs에서 순수 미술을 공부하고 학사 졸업을 하였으며, 2018년부터 서울에서 작품 활동을 하고 있다. 2020년 여름 갤러리 도스에서 개인전을 시작으로 CICA Museum에서 두번째 개인전을 갖는다.
