동양 사상의 핵심인 태극(太極)에는 우주와 자연, 그리고 인간에 대한 이법(理法)과 철학이 담겨 있다. 또한 태극은 동양 회화의 미의식에도 깊이 투영되어 있는데 특히 수묵화의 의경과 조형을 이해하고 창신(創新)을 이루어내는 중요한 비결이 되기도 한다.
이번 전시는 태극에 관한 사유와 작업을 통해서 대자연의 이법(理法)과 소우주를 이루는 인간과의 경계를 허물고 그 안의 관계성에 의미를 두며 자연과 생명에 대한 이해를 확장 시키고자 하였다.
작품 속의 색과 먹의 조합과 선과 면의 조합들은 태극의 음양의 이치에 근거하고 있다. 수레바퀴 형상의 태극에서 음과 양을 상징하는 흑색과 백색이 분화되어 있고 화면의 배경에는 채색으로 중첩되어 쌓아 올려진 방형의 괘(卦)들이 태극을 품에 안으며 함께 공존하고 있다. 공간의 전후 관계를 통해 표현된 다양한 색감의 괘들은 일종의 시간성을 암시하기도 하며 동시에 사계절의 변화에 따른 자연의 변화무쌍한 생명력을 상징하고 있기도 하다.
작품들은 자연의 질서와 에너지를 시각적인 은유와 상징을 통하여 체현한 것으로 대자연에 속한 인간의 원형(原型)의 발현이기도 하며 동시에 인간의 삶과 사유가 함축된 이미지들을 사의적으로 표현한 창작의 결과물이라 할 수 있다.
The core of the Oriental thought, Taegeuk(太極) contains the principles and philosophies about universe, nature and human being. In addition, Taegeuk(太極) is reflected deeply in the aesthetics of the Oriental painting, and in particular, it is an important solution for understanding the idea and boundary and structure of black-ink painting and creating new things(創新).
This exhibition aims at demolishing the boundary with human being consisting of the principles of great nature and small universe, making the meaning of the relationship within them, and expanding the understanding nature and life.
The combinations between colors and ink and between lines and sides in the works are based on the principles of yin and yan of Taegeuk(太極). Black and white symbolizing yin and yan are divided from Taegeuk(太極) in the form of wheel and in the backgrounds of the canvas, sticks(卦) with square overlapped in colors hug Taegeuk(太極) and they co-exist. The various colors of sticks(卦) expressed through the relationship between before and after of space suggest a kind of temporality, and they are symbolizing countlessly changing life force of nature according to the seasonal changes at the same time.
The recent works were realized through visual metaphors and symbols of the order and energy of nature, and they are the expressions of prototypes of humans belonging to the great nature, and the images implying the lives and thoughts of humans are the results of creations expressed spiritually.
