Over the Mundaneness 속세를 넘어서서
‘Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism’: The One Pillar Gate, which is called “Iljumun” or “Sanmun” in Korean, is the first gate to encounter when visiting mountain temples. The One Pillar Gate is named after the fact that its pillars are lined up in one straight line. It symbolizes entering the temple with a oneness of mind toward the world of truth while putting aside worldly desires. It is considered a boundary between the secular and the Dharma world, and is the first gateway which crosses from “this shore” to the “other shore.” I am interested in see and take the architecture photos, and want to show you images that with my own perspective and various ways of its expression. It will compose with past – modern – contemporary period and these works are belong to past period. I concerned for old architectures in Korea, and nationwide temples are the representative ones. Among the temple’s component, I felt the presence of Iljumun(One Pillar Gate), so I took many photos that focused in the ceiling part of Iljumun, is the first gate to encounter when visiting mountain temples nationwide. Every temples’ Iljumun, its meanings are the same. But its colors, patterns and constructions are all different. I think it is the interesting factor. Each Iljumun has various expression of Dancheong (traditional multicolored paintwork on wooden buildings) and decoration such as dragon and many more. It’s original intention is special. When you pass the Iljumun, It differentiate your world before and after in the boundary of each temple. It means your secular society and (another) Bhudda’s World. And it also means ordinary world and the next world. and even if you don’t know its meanings, but it has orientalic beauties itself. 대한불교 조계종: 일주문 (一柱門)은 사찰을 방문할 때 가장 먼저 만나는 문이다. 일주문은 기둥이 일직선으로 정렬되어 있다는 데에서 명명되었다. 이렇게 한 줄로 늘어놓은 이유는 일심(一心)을 상징하고자 함이다. 이 일심이란 사찰에 들어서기 전 흐트러진 마음을 하나로 모아 진리의 세계로 들어간다는 뜻이다. 이는 속세와 불계의 경계로 여겨지며 진리의 세계로 들어서는 최초의 관문이다. 건축물을 감상하고 촬영하는 것을 주로 행하고 있고, 이 이미지들을 나만의 시각과 다양한 표현방식으로 선보이고자 하는 것이 나의 지향점이다. 이 작업들은 과거 – 근대 – 현대 세 시기에 걸쳐 구성될 것이고, 이 작품들은 이 중 ‘과거’의 범주에 속하는, 전국 조계종 사찰의 일주문의 연작이다. 현대사회와 도시문명에 비교하여 그 역사, 건축양식 등이 가장 반대되는 대척점에 위치한 건축물을 고민하였고, 전국에 있는 사찰, 그 중에서도 사찰의 가장 초입에 위치해 있는 일주문에 큰 존재감을 느껴서 천장 부분에 집중하여 작업하고 있다. 모든 사찰의 일주문의 의미는 같다. 하지만 각각의 색상, 패턴, 구조 등은 모두 다르다. 같지만 다르고, 다르지만 또 같다. 이 점이 참 흥미롭다. 각각의 단청에서의 다양한 표현양식이 등장한다. 일주문을 지나갈 때, 이는 이전의 속세의 세계와 그 다음의 부처의 세계를 구분짓는 경계가 된다. 속세를 벗어나 다른 세계로 인도하는 역할을 하고 있다. 그리고 이러한 의미를 잘 알지 못하더라도, 이들은 동양적인 아름다움을 보여주고 있어 그저 바라보는 것으로도 큰 위안을 얻을 수 있다. 이를 바라보는 모든 이들이 우리의 전통의 미와 감동을 받았으면 한다.
After majoring in art management, I started working as an artist to get closer to the essence of art, and I chose a camera as a means. Using existing buildings as the subject matter, I want to show you images that with my own subjective perspectives and various ways of expression.
작가는 예술경영을 전공 후, 예술의 시작점에 좀 더 다가가고자 작가활동을 시작하게 되었고 그 수단으로 카메라를 선택하였다. 기존의 실재하는 건축물을 소재로 하여, 이에 주관적인 시선이나 표현방법 등을 더한 다양한 이미지들을 선보이고자 한다.
