    Phisicality

Following the line of projects characteristic of the “insitu” artists group, “Phisicality” discusses the specific of the gallery space and its functionality. The project, made especially for the exhibition space at the CICA Museum, starts from the idea of understanding the concepts of volumetrics and functional destination of the space related to the original destination (i.e. sculpture workshop).
The exhibition concept aims at the structural (volumetric and spatial) repositioning of the ensemble, offering a spatial alternative resolved through artistic interventions and photographic images, exhibited in the “new” projected space. Representing sculptural objects, volumes and surface-based textures, the photographs present in the exhibition serve as a representational counterpoint to the artefactuality of the gallery space. The idea of physicality becomes an argument, a pretext for exploring the relationship between object and representation and between space/volume and its functionality. The invitation addressed to the public is to reflect on the purpose and processuality which are attributed as resources in contemporary art, seen as a return to both the tactility of volume, and the dimension of space and human perception.
The physicality also opens an invitation to dialogue between the space and the viewer, as the project starts from the dimensionality and volume of the gallery. In this defined space, liminality is the basic rule of understanding art. The interventions in the space, together with the exhibited images, evoke a new identity of the gallery, an environment dedicaed to the negotiation of artistic meanings.

Started in 2018, “In situ” is a Romanian initiative of visual artists and researchers Lavinia German, Cătălin Soreanu and Mihai Verestiuc, which aims to realize site-specific artistic projects. Lavinia (b.1983) and Cătălin (b.1976) are founding members of the Center for Contemporary Photography in Iasi, and together with Mihai (b.1978), they are all professors of visual arts at the “George Enescu” National University of Arts in Iasi, Romania. Group members share an interest in both research/creation and teaching/application of principles that revolve around contemporary forms of photographic practices, transdisciplinary mediums of expression, and site-specific materiality of installative projects. Their artistic approach has developed organically by catalyzing concepts, practices, and formats that address the very nature of the contemporary art condition. Since 2018, previous installative, performative, and interventional projects were carried out in the Aparte Gallery of UNAGE Iași, and in “Th. Pallady” of UAPR Iasi.
