The House
Across the city, apartments, shops, houses, stairwells, rooftops, and streets repeat in similar forms. The gaze is not that of an owner, but of an observer, drifting across these surroundings. Stacked rectangles and exposed structures come into view—steel frames rising, construction sites veiled with fabric, hinting at the process of becoming. Noise fills the air, alongside fixed signs declaring “Safety First” or “No Entry,” reminders of both permanence and restriction amid rapid change. In a society where owning a home is regarded as a life’s milestone and a symbol of success, the vastness of architecture, contrasted with my own position and the figures of laborers, reveals the original pace of everyday life. Growing up and living entirely within the city, I am bound to the modern fate of endless “development.” The juxtaposition of worn-down buildings and pristine new structures carries both the poignancy of fleeting moments and the finality of what disappears, never to return. Through the repetitive cycle of demolition and reconstruction, and the increasingly uniform images of contemporary housing, I pause to capture the moment—suspended within the shifting landscape of urban life.
주변의 아파트, 상가, 주택, 관리사무소, 층계, 옥상, 거리는 여러 곳에 비슷한 형태로 존재한다. 시선은 소유자가 아닌 관찰자의 입장으로 주변을 스친다. 그곳에 빼곡하게 쌓인 사각형을 눈으로 담으며, 뚫려 있는 구조를 응시한다. 기초 철심으로 뼈대를 세우고, 공사장 주변에 천으로 가려진 풍경은 완성을 향해 지어지는 과정을 어렴풋이 볼 수 있다. 과정에서는 시끄러운 소리가 나고, ＇안전이 최우선’, ＇접근 금지＇ 등 안내 표지판이 달린 모습은 무언가 고정됐고, 빠르게 변화하지 않는다. 개인적인 공간(집)을 가지는 것이 일생의 큰 목표이자 성공이라 여겨지는 현실에서 거대한 건축물과 대조되는 내 위치와 인부의 모습은 일상의 원래 속도를 체험하게 한다. 도시에서 평생 태어나 살아가고 있는 나의 주변 환경은 ‘발전’ 해야만 하는 현대인의 숙명과 함께한다. 낡아서 볼 것 없는 건물과 반듯하게 세워진 신축 건물의 풍경은 사라지고 말 순간에 대한 안타까움과 허물어져 두 번 다시 돌아올 수 없는 상태를 기록한다. 도시화, 체계화를 위해 규칙적인 배열로 점점 비슷해지는 현대 주거 이미지를 발견하고, 반복적인 재건축 과정과 그 주변을 포착하여 순간에 머문다.
Hye-in You (b. 1996) explores and examines the increasingly uniform images of modern living within standardized urban environments. She documents the city along individual routes and captures the flow of changing spaces. Observing scenes from construction sites—such as elevated roads, tarps, and rebar—amid landscapes of constant development and reconstruction, she expresses what is disappearing and what is being preserved in the transforming city.
유혜인(b.1996)은 규격화된 도시의 일상에서 비슷해지는 현대 주거 이미지를 발견하고, 탐구한다. 개인의 동선을 따라 도시를 기록하고, 변화하는 공간의 흐름을 포착한다. 개발과 재건축이 끊임없이 반복되는 풍경에서 고가도로, 방수포, 철심 등 건축 현장의 모습을 관찰하며, 변화하는 도시 속에서 사라지는 것과 남겨지는 것을 표현한다.
