Internal Durée
The passing clouds through the airplane window in Haya Sheffer’s work bring to mind moments in which the body and mind can linger and step out of the constant race; a time when one can turn his or her attention inwards. The work’s title is derived from Henri Bergson’s philosophy of durée (Pause), expressing moments in which internal temporal experience shifts from external time and its demands.
Sheffer is exploring and capturing with her camera, cyclic daily movements that one can ponder at. The video shown is accompanied by a soundtrack of interviews Sheffer conducted on the theme of inner repose, in which people recounted personal experiences in those moments of stillness.
The speakers’ stories introduce questions about consciousness, space, time, silence and void, habits, conditions, fears, and moments of revelation – issues that each of us faces every day. The work creates a space that is both physical and mental and invites us to examine the significance of these moments in our lives.
Sheffer is a visual communications designer and new-media artist who explores personal, human and cultural behavior through art. She received a Masters of Design in Visual Communication from Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem, and was the Art Director of the Multimedia Department at The Israel Museum, Jerusalem. Sheffer has won several prizes and awards, and her work appears in exhibitions throughout Israel.
