Esther Son: Solo Exhibition
‘on __’ series is about playing with the repetitive properties in printmaking. Part of process in creating is thinking about the question of how I could internalize the specific language that the medium presents. Thus, it will be difficult to find perfectly printed marks in my work, but clumsy printing is creating spaces for new depths in my print-drawings. The works could be seen as a collection or ensemble of all the poorly printed marks, all the ‘wrong’ moves, traces of layering and covering of those ‘mistakes’ and marks directly out of the nervous system. What seems worthless comes together to create a new sense of value.
‘on __’ 시리즈는 판화의 반복적으로 찍어내는 성질을 이용해 놀이를 하는 작품이다. 만드는 과정을 통해 ‘판화의 특징적인 언어를 어떻게 내면화 할 수 있을까’라는 질문에 대해 답해보려 한다. 따라서 완벽하게 찍힌 자국은 찾기 힘들다. 대신 어설프게 찍힌 자국들은 판화-드로잉에 새로운 깊이를 더해주고 있다. 이러한 어설픈 자국들, 실수 한 것 같은 낙서들과 그것을 덮으려한 자국들이 모여 수집품이나 앙상블이 되어있다. 버려진 것들이 한 곳에 모여 새로운 의미를 얻게 된다.
Esther is an artist from Busan, South Korea. She studied in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (BFA 2019), with emphasis on Printmedia and Photography. She works in printmaking, drawing and photography, employing the mark-making and textural language each disciplines allow for. She is constantly searching for ways to unlearn the conventional ways of drawing, printing and mark-making. Joyousness in creating is at the centre of her work.
Esther Son은 부산 출생의 작가이다. 주로 판화와 드로잉의 마크 메이킹(mark making) 기법과 다양한 질감을 실험하는 그림을 그린다. 사실적인 표현보다는 마치 몸속의 신경계에서 곧장 나온 자국들을 추구하며, 정형화된 기술에서 벗어나고자 새로운 것을 시도하고 있다.
