Shaping the unformed
“제 작업은 컴퓨테이셔널 디자인, 자연에서 영감을 얻은 유기적 형상, 발전하는 기술의 적극적인 수용, 재료 탐구의 키워드로 설명할 수 있습니다. 전시 ‘Shaping the unformed’ 에서는, 형태가 정해지지 않은 미지의 상태인 디지털 씬에서 출발하여 형태가 구체화되어 완성된 제 작업물들을 선보입니다.
우리 일상에 산재하는 친근한 현상들을 관찰하며 얻은 영감을 바탕으로 저는 물질적인 형태를 가지지 않은 상상 속의 디지털 씬에서 이것들을 자유롭게 왜곡, 과장, 변형, 모방하는 등의 과정을 거쳐 인간과 공간에 상호작용 할 수 있는 사물들을 디자인하고 제작합니다.
이 사물들은 공간에서 단순한 장식성과 기능성을 넘어서 새로운 시각과 심상을 불어넣기도 하고, 다소 제안적인 역할을 할 수도 있습니다.”
“My works can be described by the keywords of computational design, organic shapes inspired by nature, active acceptance of evolving technologies, and exploration of materials. In the exhibition ‘Shaping the unformed’, I present a selection of my works that start from a digital scene in its unformed, uncharted state, and end up taking shape.
Inspired by observing familiar phenomena in our daily lives, I design and create objects that can interact with humans and spaces by freely distorting, exaggerating, transforming, and mimicking them in imaginary digital scenes where they don’t have any physical forms.
These objects go beyond mere decorative and functional functions in a space, instilling new perspectives and imagery, or playing a somewhat suggestive role.”
Based in South Korea, Dongwook-Choi creates objects that can play suggestive roles in space.
Computational design, organic form, deconstructive tendency, and material exploration are keywords that represent his work. Breaking the boundaries, Transferring objects from imaginary digital scenes to physical reality is the most important progress in his workflow.
