Ecology of Light
Leanne Wiggers (b.1996) is a Dutch Artist based in London, working across photography, video, installation and performance. Her practice questions the experience of space and time, the sense of the Human and the Non-Human, the connectives of ecosystems, the concept of Life, the concept of Landscape and photography. The materialities of natural, light, alternation and repetition are often key elements in her work. This she uses to explore the meaning of light as a concept of life, looking at the Sun, Photosynthesis and photography correlating with each other. By using Site-specific practices as a base to her practice, she uses sustainable processes, eco materials and close examination of the visited landscape to as a method to produce her work. This practice she teaches at Hulkes Lane Darkroom and Studio, using seaweed local to the area to process analogue film. Her theories she investigates come from the theory of ‘Non-Site’ and ‘Site’, created by Robert Smithson, therefore she looks at a lot of Landart and environmental Art where she gets a lot of her inspiration. She developed this into her own examination of a dialogue between the Inside and Outside space, looking for ways to combine the landscape with the Gallery Space using sensory experience. One of these sensory experiences she has been researching is the sensation of breath through the breathing project, examining different experience and perspectives of breathing applying this to non-human objects. She explores this further by educating herself on coding and robotics while also researching the ecology, politics and vulnerability of Air in the contemporary world. These themes she investigates through her Art by making sensory experiences within the Gallery Space, connecting to the viewer through action.
