I’m Home 다녀왔습니다
A solo exhibition by artist Estelle Yoon, “I’m Home (다녀왔습니다)” is a visual meditation on the Yoon’s personal journey and emotional landscape as a diasporic individual returning to Korea. Through photography, moving image, and glass, the exhibition explores the ‘gaps in existence’ that emerge within the liminal space between departure and return. Drawing from her life in Australia and encounters with fragments of memory in Korea, Yoon reconfigures old family photographs, childhood spaces, and traces of her late mother within the work. Anchored in the concept of jaegwi (再歸), or ‘returning again,’ the body of work reflects on how memory, place, and self are continually reshaped by the passage of time and distance. Images transferred onto glass, analogue photographs, and moving images evoke the materiality and incompleteness of memory, while carrying a quiet tenderness beyond what has been lost. Acting as mediating agents between memory and reality, they articulate the duality of intimacy and estrangement inherent in diasporic experience. “I’m Home” is not a simple declaration of return, but a layered state in which both leaving and arriving coexist. By engaging with the emotional contours of diasporic identity and positionality, the artist invites viewers to reflect on their own sense of home and what it means to return.
『다녀왔습니다 (I’m Home)』는 디아스포라 정체성을 지닌 작가가 한국을 다시 찾으며 겪은 개인적인 여정과 감정을 시각화한 작업이다. 이번 전시는 사진, 영상, 유리 등 다양한 매체를 통해 떠남과 귀환 사이에서 발생하는 ‘존재의 틈’을 탐색한다. 작가는 호주에서의 삶과 한국에서 마주한 기억의 잔재를 따라가며, 과거의 사진, 유년기의 공간, 어머니의 흔적을 작품 안에 재배열한다. 전시는 ‘재귀(再歸)’, 즉 ‘다시 돌아감’이라는 개념을 중심으로 구성되며, 시간과 거리 속에서 변형된 기억과 장소의 감각을 시각적으로 풀어낸다. 작가는 모국에서의 체류를 통해 마주한 익숙함과 낯섦이 뒤섞인 감정을 섬세하게 표현하고자 한다. 유리에 전사된 이미지들과 아날로그 사진, 영상은 모두 기억의 물질성과 그 불완전함, 그리고 그 너머에 놓인 애틋함을 품고 있다. 이들은 작가와 세계, 기억과 현실 사이를 잇는 매개체로 기능한다. 『다녀왔습니다』는 단순한 귀환의 선언이 아니라, ‘돌아감’과 ‘돌아옴’이라는 이중적인 상태를 함께 담고 있다. 작가는 디아스포라적 위치성과 정체성, 그리고 그로부터 파생되는 감정의 층위들을 탐구하며, 관객 역시 자신의 ‘집’과 그 의미를 다시금 떠올리게 한다.
Estelle Yoon is a Korean-Australian visual artist whose practice explores the emotional landscapes and material traces embedded in diasporic identity, familial relationships, and cultural memory. Grounded in personal archives and lived narratives, Yoon works with analogue photography, moving image, and glass to investigate how concepts of home, memory, and self persist through images and objects. Shaped by the philosophy of wabi-sabi (侘寂), she honours the impermanence and quiet beauty of things worn and weathered by time. Yoon’s work has been exhibited in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, and South Korea. Her practice remains in active dialogue with her origins and cultural roots, articulating the layered, fragmented emotions shaped by intergenerational love and diasporic experience.
에스텔 윤은 디아스포라적 정체성, 가족, 그리고 문화적 기억 속에 남은 감정의 풍경과 그 물질적 흔적들을 탐구하는 한국계 호주 시각예술가이다. 개인 아카이브와 서사를 바탕으로 아날로그 사진, 영상, 유리와 같은 매체를 활용하며, ‘집’, ‘기억’, ‘자아’라는 개념이 이미지와 오브제를 통해 어떻게 형성되고 전승되는지를 시각적으로 풀어낸다. 에스텔 윤의 작업에는 시간이 지나며 마모된 사물들이 지닌 덧없음과 고요한 아름다움을 존중하는 ‘와비사비(侘寂)’적 미감이 반영되어 있다. 그녀의 작품은 시드니, 멜버른, 캔버라, 한국 등 다양한 지역에서 전시되었으며, 고향과 뿌리를 향한 지속적인 시선 속에서 세대 간의 사랑, 그리고 디아스포라적 경험이 만들어내는 복합적이고 층위적인 감정의 결을 섬세하게 형상화해 나간다.
