Garden : Space, Reflection, Presence
This project involves creating abstract paintings inspired by my garden motif, exploring my life through a visual understanding of painting. I aim to recognize the coexistence of thought and perception within the potential of painting. Furthermore, I seek to find a sense of connection based on life experiences, including social and cultural isolation, and to present the diversity of imagery in painting.
My project records time, space, and emotions through the act of painting. Using methodologies based on reality, I employ various complex perspectives simultaneously, grounded in the flatness of painting. This approach experiments with new ways of understanding and feeling the world by navigating between concepts and freedom.
I embrace the ambiguity and uncertainty between consciousness and process. To develop this composition, I use contradictory elements in my paintings. For example, contrasting colors and the interplay of empty and filled spaces suggest inner turmoil and cultural complexity, making the familiar seem unfamiliar.

이 프로젝트는 나의 정원 모티프에서 영감을 받은 추상회화를 제작하여, 회화에 대한 시각적 이해를 통해 나의 삶을 탐구하는 것입니다. 저는 회화의 가능성 안에서 생각과 지각의 공존을 인식하고자 합니다. 또한 사회적, 문화적 고립을 포함한 삶의 경험을 바탕으로 연결감을 찾고, 회화 속 이미지의 다양성을 제시하려 합니다.
제 프로젝트는 회화 행위를 통해 시간, 공간, 감정을 기록합니다. 현실에 기반한 방법론을 사용하여, 회화의 평면성을 기초로 여러 복잡한 다양한 시점을 동시에 사용합니다. 이 접근 방식은 개념과 자유 사이를 오가며 세상을 이해하고 느끼는 새로운 방식을 실험합니다.
저는 의식과 과정 사이의 모호함과 불확실성을 받아들입니다. 이러한 구성을 발전시키기 위해 제 회화에서는 모순적인 요소들을 사용합니다. 예를 들어, 대비되는 색상과 비어있음과 채워짐의 공간을 통해 내면의 혼란과 문화적 복잡성을 암시하고, 익숙한 것을 낯설게 만듭니다.
“그림을 그리는 행위는 세상과 나를 연결하고, 내가 세상을 이해하는 방법입니다. 어느날, 마치 정원의 이미지가 나에게 다가온 것 같았습니다.”
Okhee Choi is an artist living in Australia who explores life through her work, employing a freeform approach that includes drawing, painting, and installations. Settling in a new country and culture was an opportunity for her to deeply contemplate her inner identity, which became the turning point in the direction of her work. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Art and Master of Fine Art from Sung Shin Women’s University in Oriental Painting.
She recently graduated from a Master of Fine Art from RMIT University. She embarked on her journey through studio practice, dedicated to unravelling the intricacies of painting with a garden motif in her award-winning art master’s graduation portfolio at RMIT in 2022. She has participated in multiple exhibitions around Korea, USA and China.
최옥희 작가는 호주에 거주하며 작업을 통해 삶을 탐구하며 드로잉, 페인팅, 설치등 자유로운 방식으로 작업하는 작가이다 . 새로운 나라와 문화에 정착하는 것은 그녀가 자신의 내면 정체성을 깊이 고민할 수 있는 기회가 되었고, 이는 그녀 작업의 방향에 전환점을 가져왔습니다. 그녀는 성신여자대학교에서 동양화를 전공하며 미술 학사와 석사 학위를 받았으며, 최근 RMIT 대학교에서 미술 석사 과정을 졸업했습니다. 2022 년 RMIT 에서 수상한 미술 석사 졸업 포트폴리오에서 정원 모티프를 사용한 회화의 복잡성을 풀어내기 위해 스튜디오 실습을 통해 여정을 시작했습니다. 그녀는 한국, 미국, 중국 등 여러 나라에서 열린 다수의 전시회에 참여한 바 있습니다.
