Desire
Human desire is an energy that yearns to be filled constantly. All of these primary energies, from positive desires such as love and joy, to jealousy, possession, and anxiety about deprivation, which are sometimes dismissed negatively, are the sources that expand and advance our lives. The artist does not shy away from this ambivalent desire, but rather affirms it as the strongest driving force of life and creates an original formative language. What the artist is exploring is the nude line of the human body, which is the most honest and beautiful form in the world. In particular, these works visualize the essence beyond a flat view through a part of a human body that is three-dimensionally inflated by cotton. This ‘volume’ symbolizes the fullness and energy of desire that is full or overflowing inside.
The artist’s method of using fabric instead of canvas and thread and sewing machine instead of paint means labor of healing by cutting desire and pigeonholing. The needle sweat of the sewing machine shows a dialectical process that delicately holds negative emotions such as deficiency and anxiety and “expandes into positive energy of life” by filling them with cotton. Through this three-dimensional volume that feels not only visual but also tactile, the audience has an intense experience in which the desires suppressed within them are liberated and affirmed. The artist’s unique humorous expressions cheerfully sublimate these heavy subjects and convince them of the positive message, “All desires were passion for life after all.” This exhibition will be a meaningful journey to discover the true driving force of life while facing the phenomenon of “floated” desires.
인간의 욕망은 끊임없이 채워지기를 갈망하는 에너지입니다. 사랑과 기쁨 같은 긍정적 욕망은 물론, 때로는 부정적으로 치부되는 질투, 소유, 결핍에 대한 불안까지, 이 모든 원초적 에너지는 우리 삶을 팽창시키고 전진하게 만드는 근원입니다. 작가는 이 양면적인 욕망을 회피하지 않고 오히려 삶의 가장 강력한 원동력으로 긍정하며 독창적인 조형 언어를 창조합니다. 작가가 탐구하는 대상은 세상에서 가장 솔직하고 아름다운 형태인 인체의 누드선입니다. 특히, 이 작품들은 평면적인 시각을 넘어, 솜을 넣어 입체적으로 부풀린 인체누드의 일부분을 통해 본질을 시각화 합니다. 이 ‘볼륨(volume)’은 곧 내면에 가득 찬 혹은 넘쳐흐르는 듯한 욕망의 충만함과 에너지를 상징합니다.
캔버스 대신 원단, 물감 대신 실과 재봉틀을 사용하는 작가의 방식은 욕망을 재단하고 꿔매는 치유의 노동을 의미합니다. 재봉틀의 바늘땀은 결핍과 불안 같은 부정적인 감정들을 섬세하게 붙잡아 매고 그 안에 솜을 채워 넣어 ‘긍정적인 삶의 에너지로 팽창’ 시키는 변증법적 과정을 보여줍니다. 관객은 시각뿐만 아니라 촉각(Tactile)으로 느껴지는 이 입체적인 부피감을 통해, 자신의 내면에 억눌렸던 욕망이 해방되고 긍정되는 강렬한 경험을 하게 됩니다. 작가 특유의 유머러스한 표현은 이러한 무거운 주제를 경쾌하게 승화시키며 “결국 모든 욕망은 삶을 향한 열정이었다” ‘는 긍정의 메시지를 확신하게 합니다 이 전시는 ’부풀어 오른’ 욕망의 현상을 마주하며 삶의 진정한 동력을 발견하는 뜻깊은 여정이 될 것입이다.
The artist is an original textile sculptor who sublimates human two-sided desires into a positive driving force in life. His work goes beyond the boundaries of flat textile art and creates three-dimensional sculptures using fabrics, threads, and sewing machines. In particular, the method of expressing the nude lines of the human body by filling them with cotton is the biggest feature of the artist’s work and is a formative language that penetrates the core theme. This volume is not just a form. It symbolizes the compressed energy and expandability of primary desires such as love, happiness, as well as jealousy and deprivation. The soft curves of the human body filled with cotton induce tactile experiences in the audience, delivering a healing sense that feels like stroking and comforting hidden inner desires. Elaborate sewing using a sewing machine is the artist’s own practice of re-creating negative energy with positive power by patiently cutting and sewing. His work, which does not lose its humor, lightly unravels heavy themes and provides insight and a sense of liberation that only those who fully accept the duality of desire can gain. Based on a deep understanding of human nature, the artist continues to explore the fundamental power of life through the everyday medium of fiber.
최경희 작가는 인간의 양면적 욕망을 삶의 긍정적인 원동력으로 승화시키는 독창적인 섬유조각가입니다. 그의 작업은 평면적인 섬유예술의 경계를 넘어, 원단, 실, 재봉틀을 사용하여 입체적인 조형물을 창조합니다. 특히 인체의 누드선 일부분을 솜으로 채워 부풀린 (stuffed and padded) 표현방식은 작가 작업의 가장 큰 특징이자 핵심주제를 관통하는 조형언어입니다. 이 볼륨(volume)은 단순한 형태가 아닙니다. 그것은 사랑, 행복은 물론 질투, 결핍과 같은 원초적 욕망의 압축된 에너지와 팽창성을 상징합니다. 솜으로 채워진 부드러운 인체의 곡선은 관람객에게 촉각적(tactile)경험을 유도하여 감추어져 있던 내면의 욕망을 쓰다듬고 위로하는 듯한 치유의 감각을 전달합니다. 재봉틀을 이용한 정교한 바느질은, 부정적인 에너지를 끈기 있게 재단하고 꿰매어 긍정의 힘으로 재탄생시키는 작가만의 수행입니다. 유머러스함을 잃지 않는 그의 작품을 무거운 주제를 가볍게 풀어내며, 욕망의 이중성을 온전히 받아들인 자만이 얻을 수 있는 통찰과 해방감을 선사합니다. 작가는 인간의 본질에 대해 깊은 이해를 바탕으로, 섬유라는 일상적인 매체를 통해 삶의 근원적인 힘을 탐색하는 작업을 지속하고 있습니다.
