Bingyi Liu has been studying multiple identities and identity ambiguity under the influence of taste memory. He is accustomed to generating a de-localized visual language through cross-media research, field investigations and live performances. His performances include a variety of forms that allow him to interact with others or integrate himself into the landscape. The whole project “Baltimore & Protease” contains three pieces of work, Outsider, 2018; Manoeuvre, 2019; Indigestion, 2020. These projects allow him to try to make a genuine connection with his own experiences, to give cliches new personal meaning.

Indigestion is a two-channel video. The research direction of this project is to explore the relationship between taste memory and taste identity. Bingyi Liu reintegrated the information about Chinese immigration in 1786 in Canton, Baltimore, and compiled the collected information into a reflective historical text, finally constructing an independent context of taste identity in order to explore the mobility and extension of identity. His performance is written on the glass repeatedly, then leaving behind a silent manifesto. At the same time, he mentioned the impact of globalization and urbanization on taste identity. “What does urbanization and globalization taste like? Does tampering with taste memories lead to new identity problems? Regardless, new taste memories are fermenting.”

Bingyi Liu (b.1993, Liaoyang, China) is a New York based artist working with photography, video and performance. He has been focused on researching the multiple identities and ambiguities under the influence of taste memory. Identity characteristics of depoliticized identity catalyze his new assertion about identity. He is used to creating a certain visual language through transmedia research, field investigation and live performance. His performances take a variety of forms and allow him to engage with others or insert himself into the landscape. It is though these projects that he attempts to develop authentic ties to his own experiences, to give the cliche new and personal meaning.
