Statement
Artist Approach
I work primarily with fluid paint on paper. I never know exactly how the medium is going to react with each other. It’s as if every time is the first time. I am attracted to the uncertainty and fragility of it. I enjoy the nervous tremble before the white surface.
The unpredictable, fragile, fast changing, moving yet permanent nature of working with fluid medium and paper engages me to make aesthetical and painterly decisions in rapid seconds and carryout strokes without hesitation. This forces me to attain absolute concentration and be in sync with all the physical and sensory occurrences and responses that arise in internal and external realms.
I want my work to manifest this meditative process and condition; open to the possibilities of things yet to come and be seen, listening, waiting through the openings, closings, fallings, settlings, scatterings and centerings, with attention to detail and the whole.
나는 주로 종이와 유체적인 매체를 사용해왔다. 재료의 빠른 흐름과 민감성처럼 자연적인 물리적 움직임과 형상들을 민감하게 성찰하며 섬세하지만 빠르게 반응 을 하는 회화 작업을 하게 되는 과정과 작업방식에서 매력을 느끼고 배움을 얻게 된다. 외부적인 움직임과 내면적인 움직임을 함께 맞춰 나갈 때, 현재에 집중하게 되며 현존하는 삶을 훈련하는 기회가 된다. 돌이킬 수 없는 매 순간의 삶이 중요 한 것처럼 붓터치 하나, 하나가 굳이 철학적 의미를 부여하지 않고도 작업특성상 실직적으로 중요하다는 점이 원동력이 되어 흥미롭게 나를 이끌어 간다.
경험상 나의 회화작업은 성찰적이고 묵상적인것 같으며 그 과정(process)과 상태 (condition)들이 작품속에서 들어나길 바라며, 보는이에게도 성찰과 묵상의 공간 이 되어, 그 속에서 마음과 의식이 정화되고 평온과 희망으로 이어지길 바란다.
HOPE
Here in silence
May judgment disappear.
Here in the void
May fear and doubt not reappear.
Here in the dark
May it shine the light
Upon the hour, the present, the presence,
The passings and arrivals,
The openings and closings,
The fallings and risings,
The scatterings and centerings,
Flowing and settling
Through your hands and pockets,
Until you land
The seed of hope.
Story Behind the Hope Series
When I was little, the world was like pink roses; beautiful, lovely and kind. Life, nature and myself were filled with magic, wonder, love and hope. Time passed and the world no longer seemed beautiful and kind, but treacherous, stark, mean and difficult. I found myself scared and anxious, and the light of joy, love and hope within me was no longer burning bright and strong.
At first, I grieved for the loss. But soon realized that the changed condition was part of a greater human experience and that the wretchedness, ugliness and darkness was necessary in signifying the worth and value of light and hope, and that they are something to be battled with and fought for. Hope is not a wishful thinking but a state of understanding and accepting whatever circumstance given is given and is what it is, and of consciously making the choice every day not to fall from grace.
I find the mechanism of hope is mirrored in my painting process. They both move and develop through the process of searching- for openings and directions- and the blank, unmapped territory, while at the mercy of natural forces and elements. They both require periods of waiting and allowing natural movements and occurrences to happen.
Hope 시리즈에 대한 노트
어릴적 나에게는 세상이 분홓빛 장미처럼 사랑스럽고 아름다우며 친절했다.
내 자신과 삶과 자연은 신비로움, 경의로움, 사랑과 희망으로 가득 찾었지만 세월이 흐르면서 세상은 더이상 아름답고 상냥하지 않았으며, 거짓되고 상막하며 무서운곳으로 변해왔다. 두렵고 불안함의 어둠 속에서 본연의 환의와 사랑과 희망으로 밝게 불타던 빛은 조금씩 힘을 잃어갔다.
이런 변화와 손실이 처음에는 슬펐지만, 어둠, 미움, 비참함과 악이적인 것 또한 인간적인 모습이자 상태 임을 깨닫게 되면서 삶은 매 순간 선과 악의 미묘한 사이에서 어떤쪽을 선택하며 살아갈지에대한 숙제와 싸움임을 인지하게 되는 계기가 되었다. 어둠과 미움이 존재함으로 인해서 선한것과 희망 과 사랑의 위대함과 중요성이 강조되며 쉽게 얻어지지않은 귀한 것임을 알려준다. 매일 선과 은혜로 부터 멀어지지않음을 성찰하여 선택하며 행동하는 것이 어둠속이 아닌 희망속에서 걸어나갈수있는 존재적인 삷이 아닌가 생각해본다.
나의 작업 프로세스에서도 희망의 메커니즘이 작용되는 것 같다. 둘다 mapping 이 안된 불확실한 공간속에서 열림 과 방향을 찾아가며 움직인다. 내 손 밖에 있는 자연적, 물질적 요소들과 흐름속에서 기다림과 움직임이 반복되며, 시각적, 미적, 회화적인 선택과 움직임을 이끌어 나가는 과정과 메커니즘이 서로 닮은것 같다고 생각된다.
April Bohm Yang (USA, 1985) is an artist living in Seoul, S. Korea. She has lived in various cities and countries around the globe, including New Zealand, where her wild imaginations and artistic inspirations were enriched by the surrounding wild life and nature. She began her
artistic life with music and playing the clarinet, which opened her to the experience and expression of the unspoken world of the poetic and dynamic human soul, and become attuned towards the nuances of meaning, expression, sound, movement, texture and color, which are echoed in her painting practice.
To learn about the Korean culture, she completed her BA in Visual Arts at the Korean National University of Arts. Soon after graduating, she moved to London and received her MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art in England. During her MA she received Matthews Wrightson Charitable Trust Awards, Man Group Plc Scholarship and was voted as the favorite by the RCA painting Alumni at the Graduation show with Thames& Hudson and RCA Society Art Book Prize.
After moving back to Seoul, she has taught at the Handong Global University as a drawing tutor and participated as an art creator for various projects in fashion and design. She won several competitions, two of which rewarded her with solo exhibitions; the 7 th uJung Gallery New Artist Award and the International Contemporary Art Solo Show Series by the Czong Institute For Contemporary Art Museum. Her works are published in the International Juried Periodical, ‘Artist Statement #2’ and ‘CICA Art Now #2’ by the CICA Museum.
She is currently working on a series of paintings about the meditative process of control and release that is mirrored and navigated through the process of painting with fast moving fluid medium.

양봄 (1985,미국) 작가는 여렷을때부터 여러 도시와 나라에서 거주하며 다양한 문화를 접하게됬다. 특히 뉴질랜드의 와일드한 자연은 어린작가의 상상력을 풍부하게 키워주웠다. 유년시절의 클라리넷 연주와 음악활동은 작가의 시적이고 추상적인 감수성과 감각들을 형상하는데 가장 인상적이고 직접적인 역할을 하게 된다. 클라리넷을 연주하며 익힌 표현력과 리듬, 템포, 하모니 및 멜로디의 흐름의 structural creation이 예술작업에도 반영되어졌다.
한국문화를 더욱 알고싶은 마음에 한국예술종합예술학교에서 조형예술과로 학사를 마친후 영국왕립예술학교에서 회화과 석사를 졸업하였다. 석사과정중 Matthews Wrightson Charitable Trust 상, Man Group Plc 장학금과 영국왕립예술학교 동문들이 졸업전에서 가장 인상깊은 졸업생에게 주는 Thames& Hudson and RCA Society Art Book 상을 받았다. 런던에서 여러 구룹전에 참여한후에 서울로 돌아와서 꾸준한 작업동시에 다양한 디자인과 패션 프로젝트에 참여했다. 7 th 유중아트센터 신진작가 수상및 개인전과 2017-2018 CICA 현대 미술 작가로 선정되어 개인전및 CICA Art Now #2 출판물에 소개되었다.
