Liquid Phantasm
나는 기호와 환상의 상관관계에 대해 관심을 가지고 작업해오고 있다. 나는 기호와 코드 사이에서 자의적이고도 관습적인 아이러니를 찾아내고, 이것들을 사적으로 재전유하는 과정에서 그것의 정체성에 질문한다.
Liquid Nostalgia 시리즈는 구글지도의 스트리트뷰를 형광빛 환영으로 재전유한 작업이다. 이 시리즈는 객관적 정보라고 믿게 하는 인터넷지도의 정체성에 대해 질문한다. 우리는 디지털 디스플레이를 통해 거리사진을 바라보며 각자의 심리적 목적(실용, 호기심, 추억)을0 투영한다. 그러므로 박제된 과거의 거리는 무엇보다 그것을 들여다보는 이용자의 환상이 가미된 향수적이고도 유동하는 환영이다.
나는 이러한 유동적 환영(Liquid Phantasm)을 왜곡된 디지털이미지로 생산하고, 설치와 가상현실 등의 형식을 통해 보다 직접적으로 체험할 수 있는 미디어작업을 진행했다. 어쩌면 지금 여기서 마주하는 풍경은 결국은 어느 곳도 아닌 곳일 지도 모른다. 또한 요란하고도 텅 빈 이미지들은 쉽게 복제되고 소비되는 현대의 디지털 이미지들, 즉 시뮬라크르들과 그 맥락을 같이 한다. (티파니리, 2020)
My works are focusing on the correlation between a sign and the fantasy within it. I find an arbitrary and customary irony between signs and codes, and question its identity in the process of re-appropriating them privately.
The Series of “Liquid Nostalgia” are the works of re-appropriating a Google Street View into a fluorescent illusion. This Series raise a question about the identity of an ‘On-line map’, which makes people believe it is an objective information. We project our psychological objectives(practicality, curiosity, memories) while looking at photos of a street shown through digital displays. Therefore the stuffed street of a past is, above all, a nostalgic, floating illusion that reflects the fantasy of the user.
I produced this Liquid Phantasm into distorted digital images, and promoted media work which people could experience more directly through formats such as installation and virtual reality. Maybe the scenery we’re dealing here now could be ‘nowhere’. Besides, these noisy and empty images share a common thread with easily duplicated and consumed digital images of modern era, which is, in other words a ‘simulacre’. (Tiffany Lee, 2020)
티파니리는 2019년 국민대학교 대학원에서 박사과정을 마쳤다. 그녀는 미디어 기호의 정체성에 관심을 가지고 작업을 진행해왔다. 특히 구글지도를 기호학적으로 고찰한 Liquid Nostalgia 시리즈는 서울국제뉴미디어페스티벌, 국제전자예술심포지엄, 비스타아트 등 다양한 행사에 초대받아 소개되었다. 최근 한국콘텐츠진흥원, 정보통신산업진흥원, 서울문화재단 등의 지원을 받아 VR기술을 응용한 매체적 실험에 주력하고 있다.
Tiffany Lee completed her D.F.A. at Graduate School of Kookmin University in 2019. She has worked as a media artist with an interest in the identity about signs of media. In particular, Especially the Series of the work “Liquid Nostalgia”, which considered Google Maps in semiotic perspective, was invited and has been introduced at various events such as Seoul International New Media Festival(NeMaf), International Symposium on Electronic Art(ISEA), and Vista Art. Recently she is focusing on media experiments using VR technology with support from Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture(SFAC), Korea Creative Content Agency(KOCCA) and National IT Industry Promotion Agency(NIPA),
