SOFT GRAVITY
Soft Gravity expands on the artist’s ongoing exploration of emotional vulnerability and the healing process. Immersive weaving forms offer a narrative about the memories and feeling toward one’s vulnerability. Weaving is a repetitive and time-consuming craft that gives the artist time to reflect on herself and space to process emotions. These elements, some dense and heavy, others softly dimmed and suspended, with draped tapestries made from a range of fibers, create a space of quiet tension and softness. Each form invites viewers to connect through the artist’s experience of the healing process. Vulnerability is often treated as something undesirable or weak. But the artist reclaims it as a space of empathy -embracing feeling broken, incomplete, or overwhelmed. Through this work, she creates an environment that is not only visually immersive but also socially resonant, offering visitors a shared moment of emotional presence and empathetic connection.
Soft Gravity는 작가가 지속적으로 탐구해 온 감정적 취약함과 치유의 과정을 확장하는 작업입니다. 거대하고 다양한 위빙 조각들은 개인의 기억과 감정에서 온 취약함, 그리고 그것을 받아들이는 여정을 시각화 하고 있습니다. 반복적이고 시간이 소요되는 직조의 과정은 작가에게 자신을 돌아보고, 감정을 정리할 수 있는 시간과 공간을 제공합니다. 다양한 위빙 조각들은 무겁거나 빽빽히 들어서 있기도 하고, 또 다른 형태는 은은하게 걸려있기도 하며 다양한 섬유 조각들로 직조된 태피스트리는 조용히 흘러내려 고요하고 부드러운, 긴장감이 감도는 공간을 형성합니다. 각 조각들은 관객들로 하여금 작가의 “치유와 극복의 여정”에 함께할 수 있도록 안내합니다. 우리는 흔히 취약함을 부정적이거나 나약한 감정으로 인식하지만, 작가는 그것을 공감과 회복의 시작점으로 다시 정의합니다. 이 일련의 작업을 통해 부서지고, 불완전하고, 불안한 모든 감정들은 개인적인 경험을 넘어 모두의 경험으로 확장됩니다. 관객은 이 안에서 감정의 존재를 함께 느끼고, 조용한 연결과 공감의 순간을 마주하게 됩니다.
Seonyoung Lee is a Chicago-based weaver, designer and fiber artist working in large-scale installation, tapestry, and soft sculpture. Originally from South Korea, her practice engages with themes of overcoming, embracing and healing from emotional vulnerability. Drawing from personal experiences, her work often incorporates abstract, organic shapes inspired by emotional wounds and scars. Using soft, tactile materials, Seonyoung transforms tangled emotions into layered, textured forms.
이선영은 시카고를 기반으로 활동하는 직조가, 디자이너, 섬유예술가 입니다. 대형 설치 작업, 태피스트리, 소프트조각을 중심으로 작업하며, 감정적 취약함을 받아들이고, 극복하고, 치유해 나가는 과정을 주요 주제로 다룹니다. 한국에서 나고 자란 작가는 개인적인 경험을 바탕으로, 감정의 상처와 흔적에서 영감을 받은 유기적이고 추상적인 형태를 작품에 담아냅니다. 부드럽고 촉각적인 재료들을 사용하여 복잡하게 얽힌 감정들을 층층이 직조하고, 촉감 있는 조형물로 변형시키는 작업을 지속하고 있습니다.
