“Everything is Movement, and Everything is Visual”
What if we could immaterialize dance movement in physical space? What if the interaction between the body and technology could lead to new dialogues and reflections? The symbiosis between dance and technology allows us to conceive new artistic installations that reflect human presence in the surrounding environment, challenging different perspectives on our interaction with others. By examining the interplay between body movement and intangible dimensions such as time, space, and relationships, the exhibition strives to democratize art and involve citizens in the displayed works.
The works exhibited in “Everything is Movement, and Everything is Visual” explore various speculative interventions in the dialogue between the moving body and machine response through artificial intelligence and augmented reality technologies. These new possibilities can transform our reflections and ways of perceiving the world and our relationship with it.
This exhibition brings together different works that Maria Rita Nogueira has been developing since 2021, spanning from her time at the University of Coimbra in Portugal to Manchester Metropolitan University in the UK, where she works as a lecturer and researcher, developing her artistic practice. Her work has been presented in the USA (Massachusetts Institute of Technology – MIT), Argentina (Bienal Intercontinental), England (Storytellers and Machines), Spain (Technarte, where her work “FORMS” received the Best Presentation and Performance Award), Portugal (Criatech, where her work “Move In Tempo” was recognized as the Best Artwork at the Artistic Residencies), Poland (Krakow Dance Festival), among other places.
It is hoped that the new provocative perspectives created through this movement and technology-mediated symbiosis will transform into a vibrant atmosphere, fostering reflection and the emergence of new questions.
Maria Rita, originally from Coimbra, Portugal, is a multidisciplinary artist who has always balanced her artistic practice in classical and contemporary dance with her expertise in interaction design. She completed her degree and master’s in design and multimedia at the University of Coimbra. During her Ph.D. research, she began integrating dance with technology, exploring new ways to visualize dance movement through interaction design, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence.
Currently, Maria Rita is a lecturer and researcher at Manchester Metropolitan University’s School of Digital Arts (SODA) in England. Her work has gained international recognition, earning the Best Presentation and Performance Award at the TECHNARTE Conference in Bilbao in 2023 for her project “FORMS.” Her doctoral research was also presented at MIT-Boston in the same year. In 2022, her piece “Move In Tempo” was exhibited at the Czong Institute for Contemporary Art in South Korea and later at the National Museum of Machado de Castro, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This work also won the Best Artwork Award at the CRIATECH Artistic Residencies in 2021.
Throughout her dance journey, Maria Rita received various scholarships and internships from prestigious institutions such as the Institute of Arts in Barcelona, Girne American University, Instável Dance Company, Annarella Sanchez International Dance Conservatorium, and Malandain Ballet Biarritz. These experiences shaped her artistic vision, focusing on the intersection of art, design, and technology.
Her current research and teaching focus on art and interaction design, fostering new dialogues between humans and machines through body movement. Maria Rita’s work is dedicated to creating visual compositions that respond to human interaction in real-time, pushing the boundaries of how dance can be experienced through technology.
