A Flux of Fixity
<고정의 유동>에서 조예지는 언어가 만든 객관적 실체와 주관적 감각 사이의 불일치를 조명한다. 3-B 갤러리에 위치한 <다른 사람의 다리를 끄는 것은 힘들다>(2023)는 ‘나’를 신체로 구분하는 것에 대한 의심으로 본인 신체감각 일부를 차단해 타자화한다. <Dialogue: Shenanigans>(2023)에서는 비몽사몽한 상태에서의 헛소리도 내가 나에게 하는 말이므로 청자와 화자가 공유하는 규칙 아래 이루어졌으며 언어는 진리를 담는 것이 아니라 언어를 사용하는 자들끼리의 약속이라는 점을 상기시킨다. 실체가 없다고 말할 수도, 항상하다고 말할 수도 없는 지점에서 작가는 고정된 실체를 버리고 감각과 관계로 이루어진 작용을 재조립해 주관적 실체를 구축한다.
In <Fixed Fluid>, Cho Yeji highlights the discrepancy between the objective reality created by language and subjective senses. Located at 3-B Gallery, in <It’s Hard to Drag Someone Else’s Leg>(2023), the artist blocks her own bodily senses and asserts that it belongs to someone else’s, casting doubt on defining ‘self’ as a body. In <Dialogue: Shenanigans>(2023) reminds us that even nonsense spoken in a half-asleep state is made under rules shared by you, the listener and also the speaker, emphasizing that language does not contain truth but rather serves as a mutual agreement among its users. At a point where one can neither claim the absence of substance nor insist on its permanence, the artist discards fixed entities and reconstructs subjective entities through actions formed by senses and relationships.
조예지는 언어와 하나의 객관적 세계를 의심하며 주관적 실체를 구축한다. 언어와 일상에서 느껴지는 이질감을 계기로 이름이 가진 개념보다는 감각과 주관에 의존하여 이를 페인팅, 인스톨레이션, 필름, 사진 등 다매체를 통해 전달한다.
Cho Yeji constructs a subjective entity through skepticism towards language and a singular objective reality. Utilizing sensations and subjectivity more than the concept of language form, she communicates the sense of dissonance felt between language and daily life through various mediums such as painting, installation, film, photography, and more.
