보이지 않는 그러나 존재하는/Unseen but Existing

하나의 즉흥적인 선에서 나의 작업은 시작되어진다. 나름의 소리와 느낌을 가진 선들이 변주적으로 겹쳐지면서 이전에 생각하지 못했던 보이지 않았던 것이 드러나기도 한다. 그 모든 흔적은 끝을 알 수 없는 깊은 공간 또는 숨을 쉴 수 있는 공간이 되기도 하고 지지대가 되기도 보호막이 되기도 한다. 그러면서도 또한 그 모든 것들은 한순간에 숨겨져서 많은 것을 담고 있지만 아무것도 아닌 것처럼 되기도 한다. 내가 할 수 있는 것은 예측할 수 없는 그 공간 안에서 호흡하고 소리를 들으며 반응하고 그 가운데서 중심을 잡아가는 것이고 그 순간은 내가 살아있는 한 순간이기도 하다.

My artwork begins with a simple line. It is a unconcious, spontanious line, yet it carries on each sound and feeling. Some lines are obvious but many lines are not recognizable, even though they are still there. I like the faint, vague lines which create subtle tension. The variation of lines create another dimension and often will become an endless deep space. In that unpredictable space, what I can do is breathe, respond by listening to the sound of lines and try to balance calmly.

Seungyean Cho is an artist based in Seoul, South Korea. She received her MFA from Rochester Institute of Technology. Her abstract paintings that often consist of subtle layered washes, rough improvisational geometry, and spatial lines have been shown at art fairs and featured in art platforms.
