Lifescape
삶은 다양하다. 그렇기에 삶을 표현하는 방법 또한 다양하다. 이 작업들은 삶이라는 개념을 어떻게 시각적으로 표현하는가에 대한 에세이다.
Life is diverse. Therefore, there are various ways to express life. My paintings are essays on how to represent life visually.

나의 모든 작업은 내가 삶을 어떻게 바라보고 있는가에서 출발한다. 삶이라는 거대한 주제를 효과적으로 표현하기 위해, 작업을 두 가지의 테마 《Portrait》과 《Landscape》로 나누어 조금 더 다각적인 방향에서 삶의 형태를 관찰하고 그것을 시각적으로 표현하는 데 집중했다.
테마 《Landscape》에서, 보편적인 삶의 형태는 사건과 시간을 통해 구성된다. 화면에는 원근으로 단순하게 표현된 풍경 위에, 오브제들이 배치된다. 그림 속에서, 우리가 살아가는 시간은 단순한 풍경이고 사건은 우리가 그 풍경을 특별하게 기억하게 만드는 오브제이다.
살아가는 동안의 모든 시간을 전부 다 기억하는 것은 불가능하다. 그렇기 때문에, 우리는 우리에게 일어난 어떠한 특별한 사건(Event)을 기준으로 그 순간을 기억하게 된다. 즉, 시간의 흐름에 따라 인식하는 기억은 점점 흐릿해지지만, 사건에 대한 기억은 더욱 선명하게 지속된다. 그리고 우리는 그 사건을 기준점으로써 그 순간을 정의한다. 그리고 삶이란, 그러한 사건들의 퇴적작용이다.
테마 《Landscape》는 흐르는 시간 속에서 사건의 퇴적작용을 통해 만들어진 삶의 특정한 형태와 시간의 연속성에 대해 시각적으로 표현한다.
《Landscape》를 통해 내가 상상하는 삶의 형태를 시각적으로 표현했지만, 이것은 삶을 원거리에서, 사전적인 의미의 관점에서 보고 그것에 기초하여 창조된 세계이기 때문에, 현대인이 살아가고 있는 삶의 현재를 그대로 묘사하기에는 부족하다. 테마 《Portrait》는 더 개인적이고, 밀접한 거리에서 관찰한 현대인의 삶. 즉, 현대 사회를 살아간다는 것을 어떻게 시각적으로 표현하는가에 대한 에세이다.
테마 《Portrait》는 표현의 방식이나 이미지적 통일성을 염두에 두지 않고 옴니버스적 구성을 통해 조금씩 다른 형태를 보인다. 즉, 현대인이 살아가는 삶의 모습을 하나의 형태로써 정의하고, 그것을 통일적으로 표현하기보다는, 다양한 방식의 표현을 통해 현대인이 갖는 내면적 복합성과 혼돈을 표현하는 데 집중하였다.
내면적 복합성과 혼돈. 즉, ‘가짜’는 현대를 살아가는 사람의 삶을 구성하는 가장 중요한 요소가 되었다. 현대사회에서 ‘가짜’는 현대인의 자아의 다중적 존재와 그것을 표현하는 가면적인 역할로서 기능한다. 비유하자면, 현대인은 무거운 가면 속에 내적 자아들을 숨기고 다니다가, 필요한 때가 오면 새로운 가면을 착용한 채 자신의 또 다른 자아로 무아의 춤을 추는 것이다. 이러한 현대인이 갖는 사회적 자아와 내면적 자아 중, 과연 어느 것을 진짜라고 정의할 수 있을까? 인터넷 익명성의 보장과 자유, 댓글, 조금 더 넓게 보면 메타버스, 부캐 문화 또한 가짜 자아의 개념에서 기인한다. 그리고 현대사회에 이런 형태의 삶이 점점 보편화되고 있음은 부정할 수 없다. 현대사회에서 ‘가짜’는 익명의 자유로써 존재하며, 타락하고 동시에 진화하기 때문이다.
테마 《Portrait》는 이런 현대 사회의 흐름에 대해 긍정하거나 부정하지 않는다. 그저 《Portrait》를 통해 내가 느낀 현대인의 삶; 현대인을 구성하는 자아의 다중적 존재와 그것에 의해 탄생한 내면적 혼돈을 다양한 형태로서 표현한 것이다.
All of my work starts from how I view life. In order to effectively express that huge notion, i have divided my work into two themes, 《Portrait》 and 《Landscape》, and focused on observing the form of life from divers direction and expressing it visually.
In the theme 《Landscape》, the form of life is constructed through events and time. On the canvas, objects are placed on the scenery simply expressed in perspective. In the painting, the time we live in is a simple landscape, and events are objects that make us remember the landscape in a special way.
It is impossible to remember all the times in life. Therefore, we remember the moment based on some special event that happened to us. In other words, as time goes by, the recognized memory gradually fades, but the memory of the event continues more vividly. And we define that event as the reference point for that time. And life is the accumulation of such events.
The theme 《Landscape》 visually expresses the continuity of time and the specific form of life created through the accumulation of events in the flowing time.
I visually expressed the form of life I imagined through 《Landscape》, but since this is a world created based on seeing life from a far-distance, dictionary point of view, it is difficult to describe the present life of modern people as it is. The theme 《Portrait》 is a more personal and close-range view of modern people’s lives. In other words, it is an essay on how to visually express living in modern society.
The theme 《Portrait》 shows slightly different forms through the omnibus composition without considering the method of expression or uniformity. In other words, rather than defining the life of modern people as a single form and expressing it unifiedly, I focused on expressing the inner complexity and chaos of modern people through various expressions.
Inner complexity and chaos. In other words, ‘fake’ has become the most important element that constitutes the life of people living in modern times. In modern society, ‘fake’ functions as a ma sk that expresses the multiple existence of the self of modern people.
As an analogy, modern people hide their inner selves under heavy masks, and when the time comes, they put on a new mask and dance selflessly with their other selves. Among these modern people’s social self and inner self, which one can be defined as real? Internet anonymity and its freedom, comments, more broadly, the metaverse, and the bukkae-culture also originate from the notion of fake. And it cannot be denied that this type of life is becoming more and more common in modern society. This is because in modern society, ‘fake’ exists as an anonymous freedom, corrupts and evolves at the same time.
The theme 《Portrait》 does not affirm or deny this trend of modern society. It is simply the expression of the life of modern people, the multiple existence of the ego that composes modern people, and the inner chaos created by it in various forms.
