감각적 구조 sensible fabric
나의 작업은 인간 존재에 대한 근원적인 물음에서 시작한다. 인간은 물질적 존재인가 혹은 영적인 존재인가에 대한 회의를 바탕으로, 자신, 그리고 인간 자체에 대한 본질적인 존재성에 대해 사유한다. 물질과 정신을 분리하는 이분법적 근대적 사유에서 벗어나 작업에 부여하는 의미는 물질과 의식, 몸과 마음의 다양한 통합과 뒤섞임의 양상을 회화의 형태로 구현하고자 함이다.
이러한 개념의 조형적 실험의 일환으로 2019년부터 연작의 형태로 나타나는 4분할 구조의 화면은 인간존재계를 표현한 하나의 시각적 구조이자 개념적 구조이다. 화면의 색면들은 칠하여 더해지는 영역과 닦여서 빼지는 영역, 그리고 아무것도 칠하여 지지 않은 여백 영역으로 분리되는 과정을 거쳐간다. 서로 다른 물리적 행위의 과정을 거친 4분할 화면구조(Quartet)안에 신체의 반복적 수행성을 통한 실의 흔적으로 남은 화면 안의 수직선은 하늘과 땅을 이어주는 선, 즉 서로 다른 두개의 항을 이어주는 선이며 개별자들 사이의 연결, 즉 관계 맺기를 상징한다.
궁극적으로 반복적인 수작업을 통해 나타난 연속된 수직선들은 유,무한성과 영원성, 다시 말해 정신적인 가치들을 환기시키는 동시에 인위적으로 분리된 가치들을 연결함을 상징한다. 이로써 작업을 통해 인간 존재란 따로 존재하는 대립적인 개념이 아닌 서로 관계 맺고, 의존하며 영향을 미치고, 서로 해체하고, 재구성하면서 변화 발전하는 존재임과 동시에 정신과 물질 두개의 항 사이에서 변증법적 운동을 하는 존재임을 발견하게 된다.
My work begins with a fundamental question of human existence. Based on skepticism about whether humans are material or spiritual beings, they think about themselves and the essential existence of humans themselves. The meaning given to work, away from the dichotomous modern thought of separating matter and mind, is to embody various integration and mixing aspects of matter and consciousness, body and mind in the form of painting.
As part of the formative experiment of this concept, the four-part screen, which appears in the form of a series of works from 2019, is a visual structure and conceptual structure that expresses the human existence system. The colored surfaces of the screen go through a process of separating into areas that are painted, areas that are wiped off, and areas where nothing is painted. The vertical line in the screen, which remains as a trace of thread through the repeated performance of the body in a quadrant screen structure (Quartet) that has undergone different physical actions, is a line that connects heaven and earth, that is, a line that connects two different terms, and symbolizes the connection between individuals.
Ultimately, the successive vertical lines that appear through repetitive manual work symbolize the evocation of oil, infinity and eternity, that is, spiritual values, while connecting artificially separated values. Through this work, we find that human beings are not confrontational concepts that exist separately, but are beings that relate, depend, influence, dismantle, and reconstruct each other, and at the same time engage in dialectical movement between the two terms of mind and matter.
