Memories in the Heart – GRACE
Everyone bears a hidden pain. We try to forget them, but they always reside in our memories. It tortures us and haunts us throughout our lives. It was hard to reveal those memories, so I tried to ignore them. But after a long time, I decided to bring back those memories.
As I was looking at my old artworks, I noticed something in common. My prints revealed my feelings and emotions during difficult times. I realized that I’ve been expressing my feelings through art. A flower amid a storm or a desolate city was a common subject matter in my prints. I thought these works were about “coexistence with society,” but they were actually about “solitude in society.” When I was in college, I wanted to blend in, but I always felt empty and isolated. My prints reminded me of my children that are experiencing the same hardship. This thought helped me embrace my scars and accept all parts of myself.
I wanted to apply this thought to my new artworks, so I decided to reuse my old prints. I made a collage out of those pieces with various mediums. Through this process, my previous works became a completely different piece. I took advantage of my numbered prints by using different versions of the same image. Using this method, I turned them into one unique artwork.
As I was looking at my finished pieces, I felt changed. I saw myself through my artworks, so it made me feel more mature. However, I still lack in many areasas well as my works. I want to improve myself in God’s presence and become a part of his beautiful creation.
Choi Eun is a Christian artist and educator who studied printmaking at Hongik Univ. in Seoul and State Univ. of New York at New Paltz (M.F.A). She was fascinated by printmaking since its technique and process were distinct from other art forms. So, she creatively utilized this technique by making collages and combining various materials to enhance her prints. She painted with a stencil and attached thread and colored sand to her prints to create unique textures. And she further expanded her artistic horizon by using wood panels and foam boards to make her prints into a three-dimensional artwork.
Choi Eun lectured at Hongik University, Korea National University of Education, and Hyup-sung University in Korea from the years 1996-2010, and she is currently a Secretary General of Korea Artist Missionary Association.
She received the distinguished Award of Excellence Prize in International Modern Art Contest Exhibit (2022), Korea Creative Art Contest Exhibit (2021), Korea Christian Grand Art Exhibition (2020, 2015), Art World Grand Exhibition (1996), and was awarded from other Competitions many times.
