“Bad” Paintings Forever
1978년 뉴욕, 뉴 뮤지엄의 설립자이자 전 관장 Marcia Tucker는 단체 전시 <”Bad” Painting>을 기획했다. 전시에 참여한 14명의 작가는 개념적 과정을 배제한 자유로운 재 료 선택과 작업 과정을 통한 작품을 선보였다. 이는 우리가 예술에 대해 가지고 있던 기 존의 가치에 대하여 묻고, 좋고 그름에 기준이 주관적 판단임을 꼬집어 현대 미술계의 반향을 크게 일으켰다.
2022년 김포, 개인전 <”Bad” Paintings Forever> 는 서태경의 회화 작품 8점을 통해 위 전시로부터의 개인적 반응과 영향, 그리고 질문을 보여주고자 한다. 8점의 작품은 각각 의 이야기와 시각, 그리고 회화적 기법을 통해 개인적 판타지를 구축하며, 현실의 논리, 기존의 가치, 미적 기준의 굴레를 벗어난 ‘자유’에 초점을 맞춘다.
작가는 이번 전시 <”Bad” Paintings Forever>를 통해 다음과 같은 질문을 남긴다:
- 개인의 철학과 의도, 이야기는 그림을 통해 전달되어야 하는가?
- 논리는 회화 속 필요한 요소인가?
- 이미지를 창조함에 있어 동기는 필요한가?
- 우리는 이미지에서 어느 정도의 명확성을 요구하는가?
- 색과 붓자국은 이미지에 어떠한 역할을 수행하는가?
- 물감의 물질성은 어떠한 역할을 수행하는가?
- 통상적으로 물감을 붓으로 사용하는 이유는 무엇인가?
- 각각의 작품을 통용하는 주제는 필요로 하는가?
- 화풍은 회화 속 어떠한 요소를 통해 인지되는가?
- 화풍은 필요한 요소인가?
- 작품의 질은 무엇으로 판가름 되는가?
- 회화에 있어서 좋고 그름을 나누는 기준이 무엇인가?
Marcia Tucker, a founder and former director at the New Museum of Contemporary A rt, curated the exhibition “Bad” Painting in NY in 1978. The exhibit gathered 14 artists const ituting a rejection of the concept and pursuing freedom in their image sources and painting pr ocess. Their paintings on show questioned traditional ways of ascribing value to artworks for the audiences and revealed that the ideas of good and bad are flexible and subjective matters.
The exhibition “Bad” Paintings Forever shows eight paintings by Tk Suh that reflect the artist’s reactions, influences, and questions raised from the NY exhibition in 1978. Each p ainting in the show employs different narratives, perspectives, and painting techniques to cons truct personal fantasies. The paintings focus on the theme of ‘freedom’ by deviating from the logic of reality, traditional values, and standardized aesthetics.
Through this exhibition, the artist leaves the following questions to be pondered by the audience:
- Should a painting convey personal philosophy, intentions, and stories?
- Is logic a required element when making paintings?
- Is motivation or reason required when creating images?
- What level of articulation is needed in creating images?
- How do the colors and brushstrokes relate to the images?
- How does the tangibility of paints relate to the painting?
- Why do we choose brushes to use paints?
- Is a communal theme necessary for grouping the paintings?
- What elements in the painting render artistic styles?
- Are artistic styles needed in making paintings?
- What or who decides the quality of the painting?
- What elements divide a painting into the categories of good/bad?
