On-Real/Un-Real
“What is Real”, “What is Oneself”, and “What is the relationship between Space and Body”? This exhibition invites the audiences to find their answers in their daily lives through his artworks that wildly cover the fields of new media art, digital art, generative art, interactive art, AR/VR, and even NFTs.
If life is composed of a pile of sensory experiences, should VR be included in this game of life? “Monitoring Room” specifically reflects on the surveillance problem coming not only from Big Brother (the government and corporate) owning the privilege to manipulate private data but also from individual social media power interfering with everyone’s daily lives. “Fish-Tank” focuses on the idea of “Free-Will” and boldly assumes that we are probably living just in another virtual reality world controlled by other high-intellectual beings just like the flock of red cubes in the VR experience. “WonderForest” intends to create an immersive nature with simple lines and geometries to challenge one’s perspective on “what is real nature”. No matter it is virtual or real, this experience will all imprint in our body/mind as real senses and memories, just like seeing movies, playing video games, or dreaming. Then, will you ignore their existence?
“LivingWonderland” and “Fragments” are the generative artworks created from my quarantine experience during the pandemic. “LivingWonderland” is a personal emotional expressive piece that reveals the inner anxiety drastically swinging between the furious thoughts(fears) and the peaceful mind, just like this living wonderland. Confronting this COVID-19 drastic catastrophe, “Fragments” illustrates the idea that everyone is like the flying color dots roaming around the space and eventually end up in their spots to make a complete painting as their final role/destination living in the world.
Although “virtual” and “real” are commonly treated as the opposite concepts, we’ve inevitably stepped into the world where virtual has merged with reality as one entire whole. “Goddess” is the augmented Instagram filter that brings a virtual sculpture mixing into a real environment. “BonJai”s are the creations of virtual living plants under the trend of NFTs and try to center on the statement that NFTs should all be created 3-Dimensionally to enhance their values in the virtual world.
