뉴미디어 아트란 새로운 매체 기술을 아트에 접목시킨 분야를 통칭하며, 예술의 개념, 시장, 교육 및 전반적 시스템에 변화를 일으킬 수 있는 많은 가능성을 내포하고 있다. 뉴미디어 아트의 ‘New (새로움)’이라는 단어의 자체의 상대성이 시사하듯이, 뉴미디어 아트는 각 시대에서 ‘새롭다’고 여겨지는 기술과 끊임없이 접목하며 발전해왔다. 뉴미디어 아티스트가 새로운 기술에 관심을 가지는 이유는 현대 아티스트에게 있어 그들의 삶을 둘러싼 모든 것들이 그들의 현실을 표현할 수 있는 작품의 재료 및 소재가 되기 때문이다. 또한 이러한 새로운 기술들은 작품을 단지 만들기 위한 수단으로서가 아닌, 기존의 작품과 예술에 대한 철학적인 개념에 도전하는 여러 가지 특징들을 가지고 있다. 또한 현대인들에게 중요한 커뮤니케이션 수단이 된 영상, 소셜 미디어, 인터넷과 같은 뉴미디어와 모바일 기기의 보급은 많은 작가들에게 새로운 방식으로 소통의 가능성을 열어주었다.
본 전시에서는 국제적으로 활발하게 활동 중인 14명의 뉴미디어 아티스트의 작품을 2주 간격으로 소개할 예정이다. Sarah Choo, Hans Gindlesberger, Joe Hedges, Sanja Hurem, Colby Jennings, Kang Su Jeong, Mark Kleine, Helen Koo, Liss LaFleur, Kim Miller, Sean Mullan, Elisabeth Pellathy, Joe Ren, Borja Rodríguez이 참여 예정으로 런던의 테이트 모던 (TATE Modern), 뉴욕 모던아트 뮤지엄 (MoMA), IEEE 국제 심포지엄, PBS 방송사, MASS MoCA 등을 포함한 세계 미술관 및 방송사에서 소개되었으며 미국에서 뉴미디어아트 전공 교수로 재직 중인 아티스트들이 다수 참여 하였다.
New media art utilizes new media technology to create art. As the term “new” in new media art indicates how such art changes relatively with “newness,” new media art has constantly incorporated technologies considered “new” at the moment. The reason that new media artists are interested in new media technology is that contemporary artists look for their materials and subject matters in their daily lives, and they use these to express their realities. New media technologies are not only tools for work, but they also contain crucial features that may subvert philosophical concepts of “Art” and artworks. In addition, new media, including video, social media, the Internet, and smartphones, have become essential tools for communication these days, and have opened up new possibilities for communication between artists and the audience.
Our 2nd international exhibition on New Media Art, CICA New Media Art 2016 features works of international artists including Sarah Choo, Hans Gindlesberger, Joe Hedges, Sanja Hurem, Colby Jennings, Kang Su Jeong, Mark Kleine, Helen Koo, Liss LaFleur, Kim Miller, Sean Mullan, Elisabeth Pellathy, Joe Ren, and Borja Rodríguez.
Colby Jennings
Colby Jennings는 영상, 인스톨레이션, 퍼포먼스를 주로 하는 아티스트이다. 그는 작품을 통해 규범적 성, 정체성(identity)의 정치, 개인적 불안감의 여러가지 요소들에 관한 개념적 접근을 한다. 그는 미소리 주립대학 아트 앤 디자인과에서 교수로 역임중이다. 그의 작품은 한국의 CICA 미술관, 맥시코 맥시코 시티의 인간 감정 프로젝트, 그리스 칼라마타의 Miden 페스티벌, 이집트 알렉산드리아의 제 22회 Festival Les Instants Video, 그리스 아테네의 아테네 비디오 아트 페스티벌 등을 통해 국제적으로 소개되었다.
Colby Jennings is an artist working primarily in the areas of time-based media, installation, and performance. His conceptual concerns currently center on normative gender, the politics of identity, and various sources of personal anxiety. Jennings is currently an Assistant Professor in the Art & Design department at Missouri State University in Springfield, MO. His work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally including at the CICA Museum in S. Korea, the Human Emotion Project in Mexico City, Mexico, Festival Miden in Kalamata, Greece, the 22nd Festival Les Instants Video in Alexandria, Egypt and the Athens Video Art Festival held in Athens Greece.
Joe Hedge
Joe Hedges는 미국 북서부 내륙에서 활동하는 인터미디어 아티스트이다. 그의 회화, 디지털 프린트, 비디오, 인터넷 아트 프로젝트에서 실험과 아카이브의 시각언어를 통해 예술과 과학의 관계를 탐구한다. 미술사에 대한 존중과 디지털 기술이 인간에게 미치는 영향에 대한 깊은 관심을 바탕으로 Heges는 현대 사회에서 이슈가 되는 단어들과 미디어를 융합한 작품을 하고 있다.
2015년 여름에 그의 디지털 이미지 작품은 뉴욕 컨템포러리 겔러리의 Reverse Space에서 개최한 Momento/Memento 그룹전에서 전시되었다. 또한 그의 인터넷 아트 프로젝트 Solgonda.com는 뉴멕시코 산타페의 커런츠 뉴미디어 페스티벌에서 소개되었다. 최근 그는 워싱턴 주립대와 신시네티 아트 아카데미 Childlaw 겔러리에서 동시에 개인전을 가졌다.
교육자로서 그는 워싱턴 주립대학에서 회화를 미디어 테크놀로지의 형태로 간주하고 회화를 다른 분야와 매체와 융합시키는 방법을 탐구하는 “회화/인터미디어” 전공 교수로 역임 중이다. 큐레이터로서 그는 collective Near*By와 합작하여 작가와 다원의 작가를 연결하는 다원예술 전시를 기획했으며 신시네티의 실험 프로젝트 공간인 러닝 붐 겔러리에서서도 전시를 기획하였다. 그는 노던 캔터키 대학에서 학부를 마치고 신시네티 대학 DAAP (College of Design, Architecture, Art & Planning) 프로그램에서 미술석사 (MFA)를 취득하였다.
Joe Hedges is an intermedia artist living and working in the inner northwest, United States. Hedges paintings, digital prints, videos and internet art projects explore the links between science and art through the visual language of the experiment and the archive. With a reverence for art history, and an enthusiastic interest in the effects of digital technologies on human experience, Hedges’ work melds vocabularies and media in a contemporary fashion.
In the summer of 2015 Hedges’ digital images were included in a group show Momento/Memento at Reverse Space, a contemporary gallery in New York City. Also in the summer of 2015 Hedges internet art project Solgonda.com was featured at Currents New Media festival in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Hedges recently had concurrent solo exhibitions of two different bodies of work, one at at Washington State University in Puallman, WA and the other at The Art Academy of Cincinnati’s Childlaw Gallery in Cincinnati, OH.
As an educator Hedges works at Washington State University coordinating the painting program as Assistant Professor of Painting/Intermedia, looking at painting as a form of media technology and exploring ways painting can interface with other disciplines and media. As a curator Hedges has worked with collective Near*By to stage ephemeral and interdisciplinary exhibitions that connect artists and pluralistic audiences, as well as running Boom Gallery, an experimental project space in Cincinnati. Hedges holds a BFA with an emphasis in painting from Northern Kentucky University and an MFA from the University of Cincinnati’s DAAP– College of Design, Architecture, Art & Planning.
Sean Mullan
Sean Mullan은 영국 베이스 아티스트이다. 비디오, 조각, 사운드와 이를 융합한 작업을 통하여 파괴적인 과정을 통한 작업을 하고있다. 그는 웃픈 (웃기지만 슬픈) 유머, 고통스러운 웃음, 모순성의 자유, 즐거운 혼란과 같은 것들에 도취되어 있다. 그는 런던의 Wimbledon College of Art에서 조각을 전공하였으며 영국 플리머스의 Plymouth College of Art에서 아트 앤 디자인 기초 과정을 수료하였다. 그는 네덜란드 Valkenburg의 Museum Romeinse Katakomben, 런던의 WCA Sculpture Project Space, 파리의 Ciné 13 Théâtre 등을 통해 국내외로 작품을 발표하였다. 그는 2015년 Asethetica Art Prize Anthology와 Catlin Art Guide 2015에 선정되었으며 2014년 런던 Cannizaro Park에서 EW Prize ‘Park 14’를 수상하였다.
Sean Mullan is an artist based on UK. Using video, sculpture, sound and their combined associations, he often exercise disruptive processes as a form of focus. He is entranced in the heartbreak of humour, the laughter in pain, the freedom of absurdity and the amusing confusion. He received his BA in Sculpture from Wimbledon College of Art, London and his Foundation Diploma in Art and Design from Plymouth College of Art, Plymouth, UK. His work has been exhibited internationally and nationally including Museum Romeinse Katakomben, Valkenburg, The Netherlands, WCA Sculpture Project Space, London, and Ciné 13 Théâtre, Paris. He was selected for the Asethetica Art Prize Anthology and the Catlin Art Guide 2015 in 2015 and received EW Prize ‘Park 14’ at Cannizaro Park, London in 2014.
