뉴미디어 아트란 새로운 매체 기술을 아트에 접목시킨 분야를 통칭하며, 예술의 개념, 시장, 교육 및 전반적 시스템에 변화를 일으킬 수 있는 많은 가능성을 내포하고 있다. 뉴미디어 아트의 ‘New (새로움)’이라는 단어의 자체의 상대성이 시사하듯이, 뉴미디어 아트는 각 시대에서 ‘새롭다’고 여겨지는 기술과 끊임없이 접목하며 발전해왔다. 뉴미디어 아티스트가 새로운 기술에 관심을 가지는 이유는 현대 아티스트에게 있어 그들의 삶을 둘러싼 모든 것들이 그들의 현실을 표현할 수 있는 작품의 재료 및 소재가 되기 때문이다. 또한 이러한 새로운 기술들은 작품을 단지 만들기 위한 수단으로서가 아닌, 기존의 작품과 예술에 대한 철학적인 개념에 도전하는 여러 가지 특징들을 가지고 있다. 또한 현대인들에게 중요한 커뮤니케이션 수단이 된 영상, 소셜 미디어, 인터넷과 같은 뉴미디어와 모바일 기기의 보급은 많은 작가들에게 새로운 방식으로 소통의 가능성을 열어주었다.
본 전시에서는 국제적으로 활발하게 활동 중인 14명의 뉴미디어 아티스트의 작품을 2주 간격으로 소개할 예정이다. Sarah Choo, Hans Gindlesberger, Joe Hedges, Sanja Hurem, Colby Jennings, Kang Su Jeong, Mark Kleine, Helen Koo, Liss LaFleur, Kim Miller, Sean Mullan, Elisabeth Pellathy, Joe Ren, Borja Rodríguez이 참여 예정으로 런던의 테이트 모던 (TATE Modern), 뉴욕 모던아트 뮤지엄 (MoMA), IEEE 국제 심포지엄, PBS 방송사, MASS MoCA 등을 포함한 세계 미술관 및 방송사에서 소개되었으며 미국에서 뉴미디어아트 전공 교수로 재직 중인 아티스트들이 다수 참여 하였다.
New media art utilizes new media technology to create art. As the term “new” in new media art indicates how such art changes relatively with “newness,” new media art has constantly incorporated technologies considered “new” at the moment. The reason that new media artists are interested in new media technology is that contemporary artists look for their materials and subject matters in their daily lives, and they use these to express their realities. New media technologies are not only tools for work, but they also contain crucial features that may subvert philosophical concepts of “Art” and artworks. In addition, new media, including video, social media, the Internet, and smartphones, have become essential tools for communication these days, and have opened up new possibilities for communication between artists and the audience.
Our 2nd international exhibition on New Media Art, CICA New Media Art 2016 features works of international artists including Sarah Choo, Hans Gindlesberger, Joe Hedges, Sanja Hurem, Colby Jennings, Kang Su Jeong, Mark Kleine, Helen Koo, Liss LaFleur, Kim Miller, Sean Mullan, Elisabeth Pellathy, Joe Ren, and Borja Rodríguez.
Liss LaFleur

Liss LaFleur is a New Media artist and scholar best known for creating works that are feminist and feminine. Exploring political and personal relationships around themes of domesticity, loss, and historic parallelism, LaFleur uses both abstract & representational forms of storytelling to articulate the politics of difference. Her projects include: performances; interactive installations; digitally fabricated objects; neon sculptures; video/ sound installations; and transmedia experiences. Her work has been featured internationally in solo and juried exhibitions, film festivals, and on the web, including the TATE Modern, Cannes Court Métrage; online with PBS and POV Digital; the Boston LGBT Film Festival; the Reykjavik Art Museum; Makeshift Boston, and at many colleges and universities nationwide. LaFleur is currently an Assistant Professor of New Media at the University of North Texas.
Kim Miller
Miller는 뉴욕 모던아트 뮤지엄 (MoMA), MASS MoCA, 뉴욕 Art in General 등에서 라이브 퍼포먼스 및 비디오를 전시하였다. 2009-2010년 Mary L. Nohl Individual Artist Fellowship을 수상, 2011-2012년 타이랜드의 Compeung, Doi Saket 에서 아티스트 인 레지던스, 2013-2014년 퍼핀 재단의 린든 조각공원에서 아티스트 인 레지던스를 지냈다. 현재 MIAD에서 순수미술 및 뉴스트디오 실습 프로그램의 학과장 교수로 재직 중이다.
Miller has performed live and screened her videos at The Surburban, Oak Park; Green Gallery, Milwaukee; MOMA, New York City; MASS MoCA, North Adams; and Art in General, New York City. Miller will screen her video “Madame Mae Nang Nak” at Anthology Film Archive in New York City this fall. Was awarded the Mary L. Nohl Individual Artist Fellowship 2009-10, Artist-in-Residence at Compeung, Doi Saket, Thailand in 2011 & 2012, Artist-in-Residence at Lynden Sculpture Garden in 2013-14 and a Puffin Foundation, Ltd. Grant in 2014. She currently serves as the Chair of Fine Art and New Studio Practice at MIAD.
Borja Rodriguez

Borja Rodriguez is a new media artist based in Spain. He is interested in a series of generalized dynamic mass participation and interaction around a myriad of social networks, blogs and large groups of file repositories shared by millions of people daily. He explores in a critical way these new social dynamics and the technologies that made them possible, making them his new reference contexts and performance of his creative research. In his work he approaches a discussion of the relationship between art, new tecnologíes and Internet especially over the last decade. His works has been featured internationally in exhibitions and festivals, including the 16th Media Art Biennale WRO, 12th Media Arts Biennale, Chile, Electronic Language International Festival, Brasil, European Media Art Festival, Germany, Impkt! Critical Media Culture, Netherlands, and Transmediale, Art & Culture, Germany. He was awarded Celeste Contemporary Art Prize, Juan Downey Prize, and OODAAQ Public Award in 2015.
Mark Kleine

Mark Kleine was born in Sunnybank, Queensland and is an emerging artist based in Brisbane, Australia. He has participated in various exhibitions in his home state such as the Brisbane Experimental Arts Festival and Art From The Margins. In 2014 he was a finalist for Australia’s Lethbridge 10000 Small Scale Art Award and was awarded Wesley Mission’s Emerging Artists and the Fulton Trotter Awards in 2015.
