Legoscape
My work seeks utopia in a dystopian reality by creating order within a set system. “Legoscape” — a combination of the words “lego,” “escape,” and “cityscape” — reflects my desire to escape from the confined space via the creation of a new world. As new buildings are erected and old ones demolished, I build my own city on an empty canvas.
Legos represent the orderly utopia that I envision, encompassed by order, repetition and perfection. All of my works share the same origin, the structural form of Legos, which is then carefully deconstructed thereby losing its form, and finally concluding once the stage of geometric abstraction is reached. By collapsing forms and dismantling them, a new order is created, starting yet another cycle of “Legoscaping.”
Legoscape(-ing), an ongoing project, continuously gives new information and writes a new set of instructions as a new panel is added and minute details are changed. With oil as its medium and the absence of straight lines, Legoscape(-ing) celebrates fluidity and accessibility. The project will continue until either time or space runs out. This idea reinforces the representation of an impermanent and transitory space, akin to the perpetual transformation of a cityscape, and in large, the fast-paced society.
The Legoscape series are all derived from Legoscape(-ing), where a section of Legoscape(-ing) is enlarged onto the canvas and transformed. To become more uniform and exact, the medium is changed from oil to acrylic, and the paintings are entirely composed of straight lines that are absent in Legoscape(-ing). From the dismantlement of the initial Utopia, a new order is constructed, yet is somehow deceptive.
The presence of harmonious and disharmonious colors in the Legoscape series suggest an incomplete, deceptive utopia, for I believe perfect order cannot be attained. In this attempted utopia, I work to create a balance within this unstable world, but only to fail. On these canvases, I create a different world from the city I see every day.
나는 레고를 통해 바라보는 세상을 캔버스에 옮긴다. 직선적인 형태와 면 분할, 그 안에 입혀지는 색상은 조직적이고 한정적이며 질서적인 이미지를 보여준다. 나의 레고를 모티브로 한 초기의 작품들은 이러한 부분을 자신의 상황으로 인식하고 표현하였는데 그 안에 보여 지는 선들은 앞에 말한 것과는 다르게 자유로운 선들로 표현하고 있다. 이는 나의 모순적 감정의 형태를 있는 그대로 반영한 것으로 질서적인 체계 안에서 안정감을 느끼는 사회적 굴레안의 나의 모습을, 반면에 그 틀 안에서 벗어나 나만의 중심과 세계를 구축하려는 이면의 또 다른 모습을 내포하고 있다.
우리 모두에게 시간과 공간은 한정되어 있다. 지금 살고 있는 장소, 내가 채워 나가야할 캔버스 그리고 정해진 공간들 안에서의 삶, 한정된 시간. 이 모든 것 안에서 나는 안정을 찾고 싶다. 그래서 나는 질서가 정립되어있는 레고에게 끌렸다. 내 작품은 레고로 출발하지만 레고의 모습을 띄고 있지는 않다. 형태가 무너지면서 새로운 질서가 생기는 레고 속에서 나는 한정된 공간으로부터 벗어나고픈 욕망을 투영해본다. Legoscape (-ing)는 이러한 나의 욕망을 잘 표현하는 단어다. 새로운 빌딩들이 올라가는 것처럼, 그리고 헌 빌딩을 무너트리는 것처럼 나는 나만의 도시를 캔버스 안에서 적립한다. 캔버스는 한정된 공간이지만 그 안에서 색들이 상호작용하는 것이 우리의 세상과 같다.
내 작품 속에서 어느 색들은 조화롭고 어느 색들은 어우러지지 못한다. 완벽한 선이나 완벽한 색은 애초에 존재하지 않기 때문에 나는 이것을 완성되지 못한 유토피아라고도 부르고 싶다. 이 유토피아에 나는 균형을 찾아내기 위해서 레고를 불안정하게 쌓아올리는 작업을 한다. 누구나 일상 속 탈출을 꿈꾼다. 그건 나도 마찬가지다. 레고를 통해서 현실도피를 하고 싶다는 시도를 해본다. 매일 보는 도시와는 또 다른 세상을 나는 기대한다.
Jen Pak (b.1985) is an artist who focuses on geometric abstraction, semiotics, color theory, and play. Her works, inspired by Legos, seek to find utopia in a dystopian society though colors and geometric forms. She received her BFA from Cornell University, AAS from Parsons School of Design, and MA from Sotheby’s Institute of Art. Her works can be found at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA) and Noroo Paint LTD and other public collections.
She is currently based in South Korea earning her MFA degree from Hong Ik University.
