2013년부터 지금까지 진행하고 있는 “replication” 사진 시리즈는 사회라는 일정한 프레임속에 살고있는 내 자신을 실제 생명체에 대입하여 작업하였으며, 우리 스스로가 만든 프레임 속에 살고 있는 현재의 우리의 모습을 나타내고자 하였다.
하지만 우리는 프레임의 양면성을 잘 인지하지 못하고 있다. 우리가 가지고 있는 틀을 시각화하며 변화할 수 없는 우리의 이야기와 불안함, 그리고 프레임과 삶과 죽음, 물의 성질의 이용하여 시각적인 반어법으로 표현하려 했으며, 시리즈로 구성했다.
나의 작업은 보이지 않는 가상의 프레임을 시각화 시키는데 목적이 있다. 인간과 사회의 관계에서 ‘Frame = 틀’이라고 하는 것은 하나의 경계를 이야기한다. 보이지 않는 ‘경계’ , 그 ‘틀’ 이라고 하는 것은 끊임없이 유기적으로 연결되어 있다.
우리 모두는 그 경계 사이에서 공존하고 있으며, 우리의 의식행위는 보이지 않는 경계 위에서 만들어 진다. 우리는 항상 나와 다른 이의 경계 지점을 인지하고 그것에 대해 고민하고 관찰한다. 그리고 그 경계들이 중첩되는 지점에는 사회가 있다. 현대사회는 끊임없이 새로운 ‘틀’을 만들어내는 공간이다. 그리고 그 속에서 생겨나는 변화들은 다양한 이야기들을 이끌어낸다.
조한진의 작업은 그 ‘틀’ 의 안과 밖에서 생겨나는 모호한 경계과 변화에 집중한다. 작가에게 있어서 틀은 이중적인 공간이다. 그가 주로 사용하는 ‘물’이라는 매제는 수중생물을 생존할수 있게 만들어주는 필수요소이기도 하지만 거꾸로 생명체를 죽게 만드는 원인이기도 하다. 작가가 만들어낸 인공적인 공간에서 살아가는 수중 생명체는 그 공간에서 살아갈 수 밖에 없으며 결국에서는 그 곳을 벗어나지 못하고 박제화 된다.
작업들을 통해 우리가 지금까지 살아온 ‘사회’를 새롭게 볼 수 있는 기회가 될 것이다, 사회 라는 ‘틀’을 어떻게 바라보고 그 속에서 어떻게 살아갈 것인가 하는 것은 모두 개인의 몫이다. 하지만 중요한 점은 그 속에서 선택을 하는 주체는 언제나 우리 자신이며, 우리는 모두 더 앞으로 나아갈수 있을 거라는 믿음을 나는 가지고 있다.

My works visualize invisible frames. In the relationship between man and society, ‘frames=틀’ are kind of boundaries. These invisible frames, these boundaries are organically connected to each other.
I think we all live among these invisible boundaries. On those boundaries, our conscious actions are made. We recognize boundaries between ourselves and the others and always observe and think about them. And society exists where these boundaries are overlapped. Contemporary society continually creates a new ‘frame’, and changes arise from that lead us to various stories.
I focus on these vague boundaries and changes that emerge from in and out of the frame. For me, a frame is a dual space. Water-his mainly used medium- is the essential element that makes the aquatic life survive but also is the cause of death to living things. Aquatic lives have no choice but to live in the artificial space and ends up there like stuffed.
Through my works, I want to suggest a new perspective on the society, and inspire people to look back on their lives and their relationships. But in the end, it is up to the each one of us to make a choice about how to see our world and the way we live our lives in it.

조한진은 실험적 미디어 아티스트이자 미디어디렉터로, 영상과 미디어아트를 공부하였으며 특정한 매체에 국한하지않고 다양한 매체를 통하여 자신만의 방식으로 가상의 프레임을 시각화하는 작업을 한다. 살아있는 생물을 다루는 작업을 많이 했으며 ,2013년부터 이러한 맥락으로 비디오 아트, 사진, 인터렉션 작업 등의 다양한 미디어를 이용해 작업해오고 있다. 최근 2015년에는 gallery rahan에서 개인전을 가졌다.
Johanjin is a Seoul-based media artist and director working on video, photography, and interactive art. His work visualizes invisible frames. Johanjin consider these invisible frames (틀) as boundaries between the individual and society, which are organically connected to each other. He is also highly interested in dealing with living things in his works. He recently had a solo exhibition at the gallery RAHAN.
